After reading a few of the theft/ trespassing threads and having my deer camp broken into now three times in the last year, I wanted to send out a PSA that now that deer and duck season is over that this is a good time to ensure you have locked up/secured/ taken home anything you don't want stolen in the off-season. I hope all those who steal from hard-working guys that like to hunt are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Good call. We actually leave ours unlocked and take the valuables home...figure if they want in, they will just break something if it is locked and cost more money. Not much worse than a thief.

I strongly dislike people who steal. They are some of the lowest on the planet. Unfortunately they exist.

Are you leaving a Travel Trailer unlocked or something else?

Yes. I leave the trailer unlocked and my shed. Don't like replacing doors and jambs...

Then again, it helps that the rancher, his son, and two other live on the place and the ranch hands are in and out of the area pretty often. Plus, it is a year around lease, so there is usually someone around. Most the guys are retired and some dang near live up there during the week.

We leave our RVs unlocked and take everything of value home with us, too. It sucks to get to lease and have to put all your plans on hold to run back into town to the hardware store so you can fix a broken window or lock. Rather just let them walk right in and realize there isn't anything worth stealing.

Like others, the best thing to do is leave it unlocked with nothing of real value left behind. One lease I was on for quite a few years, our camp was right off a fairly busy blacktop (maybe 150 yards or so) and easily visible and accessible from the highway for anyone willing to hop the fence. We had a couple of trailers and an old farm house that some used for a bunkhouse and also a place to hang out and watch a movie or a football game. We never left any guns or anything of real value, but always had a TV, VCR/DVD, sleeping bags and some would leave some of their hunting gear, i.e., coveralls or hunting boots, etc. For awhile we put a padlock on the door until we thought about it and thought if anyone wanted in, all they had to do was bust the window.

Oddly enough we never once had any instance of anything stolen or coming up missing.

Exactly like a place I was on for 7 years or so. We never locked anything and never had any problems that I was aware of. I feel for the guys that deal with it consistently

My camphouse is always unlocked. Ain't nothing much in there-some cull taxidermy and deer/camp prints and signs might get stolen one day I guess. Folks come through periodically I can tell. Had some decent stuff stolen early on before we learned not to leave anything of value there.

One time the front door was unlocked but someone locked the back door. That's right-they kicked in the back door. bang

Last break-in we had, they stole pots, pans, knives, forks..anything that could be sold for scrap. Even unscrewed the shower fixtures from the wall.

All we have is furniture and 2 old TV's at our place. Nobody has ever bothered it since the renter usually has cattle on the place and drives through all of the time. Then at planting time he is in and out planting. So it looks like someone is there most of the time.

We have illegals come through at our place, only had one issue, we leave a trailer unlocked so they can go in there and leave the rest alone, but, last year they broke into the locked trailer and stole all the socks and t shirts that were in there, they left the bottled water and can food though

Something we do not have to worry about too much. We are a couple of miles off the public road. The public road dead ends in to our lease and the Colorado. I was more worried about it when we had a cabin on the river. LO brought he new GW in to meet us and the GW said you never have to worry about me coming back. He may have been just baiting us by I think he was serious because it took too long to get in there.
