I'm from Missouri and am moving to Midland/Odessa area and was wondering if anyone can tell me the type of terrain. I'm a coon hunter and was wondering is there woods available to run dogs? Thanks for any help.

welcome My condolences on your new home location grin
The terrain in that area will be much different that what you are used to and very hot/dry climate most of the year. It will shorter growth mesquite and cedar thickets. Some areas of larger trees along drainages. Might want to have your dogs snake trained and teach them what cactus/thorny brush is also. Texas is 97% or more private land so you will need permission to trespass onto private land. A lot of O&G activity in the area also.

welcome

Hunting at night in that country will get you and your dogs full of cactus and mesquite thorns. Hard to find a tree tall enough to tree a coon in as well.

If you can get permission on property there are some coons but doubt they will be treed. Most trees big enough for shade you have to crawl under if you can share with snakes and we have plenty of cactus to drive your hounds crazy.

Let's just say you are in for "culture shock" if you have not been there yet. Most of the coon hunting is done at night with a spotlight if you get permission from the landowner. You will find most landowners will trap coons over using dogs. You will have to get more into East Texas to find dogs used for coon hunting.
Here are few representative pics of what terrain will look like.

This is "classic Texas" terrain. There's hardly a natural thing in the area that won't bite, burn, sting, scratch or stick you.

Hogs if they can be found in this area are high priced. It's the private land issue. But if you move to Odessa give me a shout.

I was planning on living in Odessa, I guess if I can't hunt much then it's a good thing my boy is into football. I guess I'm in for a real life change. I'm used to hunting 5 times a week...

Well we do have dove hunting and you will make resident status by then! We have rifle range and lots od room to expand your horizens....and football! Don't worry about crime rate, the MRT has never liked Odessa. Give me shout and will give you high and low points of area. After 52 years I have hit all of them around here!

Look in to hunting in New Mexico, lots of BLM land and not that far to the state line from Odessa.

that area has good hunting, it is different from what you are used to, but that's not a bad thing either.

Nobody mentioned that the whole area smells. I know it's the smell of money, but it still stinks, especially if it ain't yours.

If you are a deer hunter there are Mule and whitetail in the area. Quail can also be fun.

Desert. There is no woods. There are no trees. Half-day+ drive in any direction if you want to see those.
You'd be better off with a camel (instead of a dog) if you want to 'chase game'.
In Texas we put most the trees in East Texas.
