Just received word yesterday that the lease my group was on in southern Mills county is going corporate. Group has been on it for 8 years, wish we could have had 8 more. It is what it is, several members on here were on it best group I have been with since my dads lease in Harper back in the 70's and 80's.

Of course I am looking for my family first but would like to find a spot we can keep the core of our current group together could bring up to 10 guns. Management minded we are used to feeding corn and protein, have all of our own lodging (Trailers). A few of us do have children that hunt but not without us with them to make the right decisions.

Would like to stay in the Mills, Brown, Lampassas, San Saba, Llano, Comanche, Coleman, Coryell, Hamilton, Erath area. Willing to come further east north or south not too much further west.

My daughter just got her first deer this past Saturday, need to keep these smiles coming!

I thought those were more southern Hamilton/eastern Mills. Maybe they have more down south.

Yes it was the winters property. We were almost halfway between Lometa and Goldthwaite so I call it southern mills. Winters have property all over. From Brady to Evant and Lampassas to Brownwood from what I understand.

Interesting.....we used to hunt one of their properties too around Evant for about 8 years and lost it because they decided to lea$e to a corporation. The ironic thing was when we got on it, it was because it had been a corporate lease and totally abused, both the deer herd and the ranch itself.

Yeah I hate it after years of protein and deer grow, I imagine a company is going to come in and shoot it up. It was just starting to get really good.

Not sure what the pasture was called, but we were just north of Evant maybe 3-4 miles between 281 on the east and FM 2414 on the west. I want to say we lost that place around '02 or '03. It was by far my favorite lease....I really miss that place.

Did you hunt around there too?

We're on the other side of 281 and closer to Evant. Just finished our third season and looking forward to the next. My buddy and I are taking over responsibility for our pasture this coming season and are going to have to bring a few new guys in. We don't see a ton of deer but we've been laying off the trigger, keeping the feed going and seeing gradual improvement. I'd say we are still in rebuilding phase but I don't know if it's an area wide thing due to range conditions or something else hurt things before we got there. I was hoping to hear how other guys in that area have done the last few years compared to several years ago.

Sounds like y'all are just north and east of the Elk Stop?

I had the same thing happen and have had friends that it happened to also. The little guys get a non-braggable sometimes shot-up lease and go thru years of building it up until it has turned into a great lease and then the landowner takes it away from them and leases it to deep pocketed corporate that comes in and shoots it to heck again. That way the landowner gets to use some little guy to rebuild it for him for free, the little guys have to pay the landowner for the "privilege" of rebuilding the property for great hunting, the little guys get it yanked away from them and then the landowner gets to lease it out for a huge fortune to corporate as a "Trophy Lease". To top it off, corporate can write it off on their taxes and us little guy taxpayers get to pay for the corporate lease thru our taxes. If you don't believe that, check it out. Corporate really doesn't care what it cost because it ends up being free to them.

billkd.....know right where y'all are. Your land is what the brother (who's now deceased I believe) of our owner owned. I remember hearing that they split it up when their father died and one brother got everything on the west side and one the east. We were just north up 281 a couple miles on the west side where those big hills start.

Do y'all lease from a guy named Rex now? Feel free to PM if you like.

HillbillyDeluxe, My parents used to lease your place back in the 80's on the west side between the mountains. I would run away from any lease run by Rex. When he took over the East side of 281, it went down hill real quick. He gave out a ton of permits to hunters and they took them. The last year we were on the lease we had twice as many permits as deer seen all season. For a MLD lease, they did not do any management. Its good to see it coming back around for you Bill, but I would be worried about building the herd back up. They are not afraid to lease if out from under you. I bet this was not the first time or the last time they lease or take away a lease from a group.
