If you were hunting a new Spring turkey location...public land, with limited time to scout, what would be your key indicators having not actually seen or heard birds? Would you look for big trees, how close to water do they stay, specific type of terrain, valleys or hilltops, etc.

Big roosting trees near open field(s) with water nearby.

Find the high ground and listen early and late. Pinpoint their direction and use cover to move closer.

If you got a wet weather creek with some hardwoods amongst those mesquite fields.....that just might be your roost!

They like large trees near water with a brushy undergrowth, but I have seen them compromise when needed. If it is a heavily used roost, there will be poop and feathers under the tree.

All the above, even if turkeys are not roosting on your place doesn't mean they will not be there during the day, turkeys range over pretty large areas through the day returning to the roost before dark.
