Thermacell. I turned it on in the woods of Canada on a bear hunt. Not a single bug bite. Loved it!

For me, the answer to the original question is a rangefinder. How I ever hunted (effectively) without one is beyond me. Our country is open, and you can stretch a barrel as far as you want. Prior to the rangefinder, you took a good (uneducated) guess before shooting. If you were really creative, you pre-placed markers at known "stepped off" distances; but this only worked for blinds. Everything else was strictly a guess. I missed a mid-140s droptine one time that I felt confident was about 250 yards. After the shot, I stepped off over 400 long strides and still wasn't there...

My other must-have checklist items are: rifle, binoculars, and backpack (pre-packed with spotting scope, gloves, camera, TP, extra ammo, tape, flashlight, knife, etc.)

shooting stick. fits in the side of the backpack and comes out when I'm on stand. Even in a box blind, the padded "Y" of the shooting stick makes a much more stable shooting platform and no heavy sandbag to tote around.

Pay it forward - Kids are the future.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

This will sound funny but the two things I added to my backpack this last year were large safety pins and a roll of sticky back velcro.

The safety pins come in handy for a lot of things but the main thing I use them for is a easy way to tag a deer. I just pin the deer through its ear and add the tag.

With the velcro, I can hang things in the blind, vehicle or on the backpack if I need my hands free for other things.
