I hunt in Llano Co, and I don't have much luck calling Coyotes. I've had several folks tell me these yotes get educated, and can be harder to call. Looking for ideas.
I have tried a cottontail mouth call, and also have a Fox Pro Spitfire. Called in lots of Foxes on baby and Adult Cottontail, but haven't called in a yote yet. We've got plenty. I hear them almost nightly, and have seen several from the stand or while stalking the place. Killed a couple that way. I've tried multiple spots for calling, both after dark with lights and in the mornings. No takers.
Any tips or tricks for what has worked well for others in the Hill Country? Now that the off season is getting close I'd like to get after them. Many thanks.

Don't over call, or call too loud. Change up your calls.

I hunt in Llano as well, I havent tried to call them during deer season but will try now that it is over. I killed 2 last year around 8 in the morning just passing thru. Its thick where I am at so I would assume you have the same issue, maybe they are sniffing you out before you see them.

Don't over call, or call too loud. Change up your calls. What is "not too loud?" mid-way on the volume? I will usually try one call fro ~20 minutes, then try another for ~15. I'll give each spot about 45min, then move if no takers. I hunt in Llano as well, I havent tried to call them during deer season but will try now that it is over. Alot of it is thick, but I do have a few places where I can get a ~150 yard view and play the wind. I also have a view places where I can hunt from a tall bluff and put the call down in the valley below to minimize the winding issue. Hasn't made a difference so far.

I'm in the same boat. I bet 6-8 different people have been to our place in Mills County in the last 25 years (some of them multiple times), and no one has ever successfully called one in. I've killed one driving around in the truck, and two from a stand. I've seen about 8 others in various places/times that got away. Last year walking to the stand I got yipped at at fairly close range (100-150 yds), and my dad had it happen to him this year walking out one evening. But we've never killed one with a call.

I've tried both. Tried running it for 2 mins, then watching for 15. Also tried running the call continuously while scanning with the light continuously.

I call for less than a minute and then wait 10-15min. If nothing shows up in 45 min, you need to move.
With spring coming up you should get a howler and try high pitch challenge barks if a distress call doesn't work.

20-25 minutes for a yote is enough for me, 45 minutes and I am cat hunting. May try a totally off the wall call, since I bet they are big time smart by now, something like a woodpecker (good for cats too)
You can almost bet they will come in from downwind, try to set up where that flank is wide open (no cover).

OH, Always start as low volume as you can and still sound good. Raise the volume after each 5 minute rest if needed. If they come in close, with your weapon up, "kiss" your hand to make a squeak noise and you wont have to move, they can hear that at 100 yards if the wind is light.

Just me thinking, but I don't think there are as many coyotes in the hill country compared to other parts of the state. I think govt trappers keep em knocked down because of sheep ranchers. Of all the years I've been in the hill country i don't think I've seen half a dozen. Just something I thought of. On another note you may want to try calling at night.

Yotes are all over the place, they are just elusive and pretty smart. They will wind you quicker and farther away than a deer will and they learn quickly. If you shoot and miss, or they see you while calling, doubtful you will get them back in that same area again.

Both of the answers above are correct. llano county cattemans association pays a bounty on coyotes or used to so coyotes are there but not good numbers and the ones that are there are super wary. You should be calling up lots of Grey fox and raccoons though. Last time I called there I think I called 1 coyotes 14 grey's and a few raccoons. That was in one night and killed the coyote at daylight as I heard it howl so closed the distance and called it in with the secret sound.

mating time... try female howls start soft and increase volume slowly. I also have good luck with turkey box call, like a spring hen this time of year! good luck!

I have had really good results with a crow frenzy call after a rabbit distress call
Isn't the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?

Thanks for the tips fellas. I'll be giving it another try in a couple weeks, and will definitely try some of the female and territorial howls as it should be breeding season. The crow frenzy is an interesting idea as well.
