I am taking my wife hog hunting the first weekend in Feb Her 7mm08 is sighted at 50 yards firing Hornady 140g About how high will she need to aim to hit her target at around 150 yards? The place we are going and the blind we are going to be in is 147 yards from the feeder I want her to have a good time most of all, but I would also like her to get a kill if something walks out This will be her first hog hunt and I want her to be able to hit a hog, coyote, what ever, if it comes out
Thanks in advance for any info to help her out

When you're zeroed at 50 yards, you're also zeroed at 200 yards. Her bullet will be about 1/2" high at 150 yards. So any hog she gets in her sights, hold center and touch it off. Sure hope she gets to hit something so that she will get the addiction.

My Nikon Spot On app shows just .62 inches low for a 50 yard zero with that round at a target 150 yards away.
Either way, and as Fireman noted earlier, no hold over is needed.

It is close enough for any hog out to 200. Haven't run any numbers on it in a long time but have been shooting one since 1982.
Good luck on the hog trip, hope she gets one or a bunch, mostly have fun

What Colt sez in plain Anglais & mon fre's non CaJon....is called Max Point Blank Range, or MPBR, or "shooting the tube".
The principle is to set your crosshairs, based on caliber, bullet weight & MV at a given distance where the rise and fall of the bullet will never be higher or lower than an "X" sized tube ( the amount of rise and fall distance you decide is appropriate based on your caliber, bullet weight and MV for the critters KZ you are shooting at), and I seem to use a 4-5" "tube" or about half the 9"s of a WTail's KZ is, and learned to be fairly successful back in my salad days out to around 300/350 yards off hand using a hot 270's 130/140gr 3100/3000MV load. This is NOT MOA Precision Shooting like we talk about it today, but about putting meat in the freezer.
As FJG pointed out the everyday deer caliber Rule of Thumb is "at a Zero of 50 yards, you'll be GTG out to around 200 yards, and you can graph that to see how it works, using the www. Handloads.com ballistic calculator. Just don't forget to put in the 1.5" above barrel aiming point for the "normal" 3x9x40 scope and medium mounts, otherwise you'll skew the #'s.
I am old enough that this was THE Only The Way to hunt accurately in my mispent youth of the mid/late '60's, in those pre BDC/Mil Dot/Lazer Rangefinders et all for a dependable aim and squeeze Kill Zone Shots with a simple cross hair scope, now called a VPlex...and still works today. Ron

Go to the range, and actually shoot targets at the distances at which hunting will occur.
Anything less is a guess, which might be right, or might not.
Paper targets provide accurate, objective information.
Factory ammo often is slower than advertised, sometimes considerably so, which increases drop.
Also, scopes (and shooters) can do odd things that are not predicted by ballistic software.
The key is to obtain "true statements" from actually shooting targets.
Also, a little practice often helps, and never hurts.
Try 50, 100, 150, and 200.

Bookmark this web site. Great ballistics reference for maximum point blank range. I always site my guns in this way to ensure I don't have to bother with hold over out too 300 yrds. http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htmAnd make sure the wife has practice with the gun ahead of time. That's your number one key to success.

Took GF to the range with a .17 and she shot very well. Moved her up to a .270 and she was a natural on the sand bags. She was ready for her first hunt. Missed FOUR consecutive shots under a 100 yards on live targets. I guess I should take the blame for this coz I don't recall ever killing a deer off a sandbag either. PLEASE put her in natural hunting positions and take some shots....and make sure she can acquire the target and take the shot in a reasonable amount of time. Good luck and happy hunting.
