I hope I don't choose you as my taxidermist, because you won't be.

This is not that uncommon of a practice. Allows some additional work to be done/speciality work. It's just like many other type of businesses. Bring on a subcontractor to do some additional work. Taking on an employee requires a lot of cost/expense for maybe only a short-term need. Would rather see a guy keep his business running and know when he needs help verse not understanding business and increasing wait times to some crazy amount. Shows he's running a business.

It really isn't at all.... some taxis only mount certain animals and have others to do things they don't like to mess with. Just the wow factor of people seeing this and thinking about it before they use the guy... other wise no one would have known and the customer would have been happy also...

Its funny to see the responses when folks "see behind the curtain". If everyone knew how often this happens they would be way less apt to talk bad about "garage mounts". Some of the best work I have seen comes from guys that do competition work and pay a few bills doing wholesale pieces on the side. Heck next time your at your favorite taxidermist shop ask them if they do there own rugs, fish or birds. Odds are at least one of those is wholesaled out.

As noted this is very very common. Lots of shops have several taxis on staff, or sub out excess work. Its just like any other business. Also, just for the record, I know Ryan and he's a stand up guy. If you send him something to be mounted, it will get done quick, and it WILL be a high quality mount.
