i was watching football and had a fire blazing, and the wife says "we could sure use another deer for the freezer". Looked out the window and it's raining and 30-something degrees. Dang. Gathered up my stuff and headed for the woods. Turned around and went back and got the Kubota, which has a roof and windshield. The plan was to run the deer off with the Kubota so I didn't have to shoot one. Got to the back power line and there are deer everywhere, but they all ran into the woods. Good. Got in the stand, loaded the rifle, got my binocs and here come all the danged deer again. And there's the darn spike. Today. Now. Freezing rain. Well, I'll just ignore him and maybe he'll leave. Half hour later he's still out there. Dang, I'm gonna have to do this. Wait, he's leaving. Nope, he came back. Rain slacked up a bit. Gotta do this. Made the shot. Rain has picked up. Miserable dang day. Got him to the barn and got him processed. Can't feel my fingers. Run hot water on them. Went back to the house. Wife says "Yay, we got one". Yup, WE got one. Must have whiskey.

Scored the spike. He's a 12 1/2. I'm warmer now.

I've had those kinds of days.

Great story 603country. I have a hard time convincing myself to shoot young spikes. Earlier in the season I had a spike come to the feeder and knew that I needed to take him. I put the gun out the window, lined up the sights, squeezed the trigger, looked out the window and he and the 2 doe were still standing there. I had a second chance but let him go because I did not want to gut him and drive to town to put him in a cooler. Fast forward 3 weeks and took him out on a sunday morning, gutted him and dropped him off at the processer on the way home. B&C score 24 3/4.
