Wednesday, New Year's Eve: My grandson and I went hunting in Callahan and Eastland Counties on Monday and Tuesday. Monday was a little too warm, like early season. Tuesday was 33 degrees, light rain and wind all day, muddy and just plain nasty. I saw several weather forecasts for freezing rain and icy roads on I-20. I tend to think cold weather is good for hunting and I don't mind the cold, but all I could think of was sitting on the road for four or five hours behind a wreck on Ranger Hill. We came home last night, instead of today. Weather reports this morning said it was 14 degrees at our campsite and Abilene roads were covered with ice. Hmmm... Anyone doing any good out there today?

I am about to head out to work on doe numbers this afternoon and then tomorrow. I have 44 degrees not and light misty drizzle with stiff winds in Goliad County. Talked to a friend in Brady an hour ago and he had 18 degrees with fog at that time. Had light coating of ice on everything from the fog.

It was bad enough that some businesses in Abilene closed today.

Hunted this morning before coming to work. Seen 12 doe, 3 spikes, 1 6 point, 1 8 point, and 2 nice 10s. Was going to take the 8 he is 5.5 both 10s 3.5.
8 never came closer than 250 yards which normally wouldn't be a issue but I only took my 22-250 and won't take a head shot past 200. Just being ethical.

I did with clients this morning, was tuff on fingers and toes. We harvested 3 management bucks this morning. Heading back out in a minute, good luck is coming this evening. Good gentleman and ladies if your hunting the cold today.

I went yesterday evening and had intentions of going today and tomorrow. However, the usual 1 hour, 54 mile drive home turned into 3 hours creeping along at 25-30 mph the entire way in 4wd. Already had tanker trucks and cars littering the ditches. I believe yesterday was my last day of the season to hunt. Not worth the risk of getting on the roads. And thats hard for me to say since I have been chasing two nice 10pts the entire season. Oh well, they'll just be bigger next year, right?

Wife and I are taking the heater and heading out about 4pm. We watched a 1 1/2 year old with 8 inch spikes Christmas Eve and I wouldn't let her shoot because we had things to get back for and I figured the processors would be locked up. Wifey has been on a mission ever since. cheers

Just got to the blind. Hearing shots every few minutes and sometimes every few seconds. My guests cancelled on me, but I was packed so came on myself. Brought portable buddy heater to the blind for the first time in my life, but may not need it with two windows closed. Only 31 and no precip so far here south of Fbg.

Good hunting and Happy New Year to all.

CR, I was successful. Not the biggest I have seen down there but he was just asking for it. I had hiked and glassed for 6 hours. I saw several, but only one shooter in the group that didn't do the the usual 50 yd dash and stop to look back at what he was running from. After having no success, I hiked back to the truck and was gonna drive back in to camp to refuel my appetite. As I am approaching one of the many cattle guards on the lease, there stands this mulie grazing. Due to the frequent oil traffic on the lease most of the deer are less skittish so he let me drive up to with in 20 ft of him. He looked up, slowly worked his way over to a cross fence, jumped over and then grazed his way around behind me. I got out, pulled the gun out of the case, loaded a round and dropped him 30yds from where I was standing. Bizarre, but hey, I'll take it. I got skunked with the WT's this year.

I went out and checked on things anyway so I spun the feeder and sat in the blind awhile.
When I got arrived, there wasn't a spec of corn on the ground left from this morning.

Didn't see anything and headed back, didn't want to stay out to late with the roads like they are.

Congratulations theringworm. Well done.
I've watched a dozen does and yearlings. All but three have drifted off. Not a single horn today. I'm sure Mrs. Creekrunner has placed her New Year's Eve martini order already. Better make tracks.
