I am on the hunt for a scope for a .243 and have a budget of $400 to $500 total. I need to get rings, bases and scope for no more than $500. I definitely want a 4X? because I have used a 3X9 and prefer the higher magnification opportunities. Please let me know you suggest. Thank you.

Vortex Diamondback HP 3-9x40

Got one for my XBolt 7mm-08 and love it.

I probably should of used a - instead of a X after the number 4. I really want something with more magnification than a 3-9X40.

And I messed up as well. The scope I'm referring to is a 3-12x40.

Vortex Diamondback with DNZ reaper mounts.

Or if you can find a used Vortex Viper, get that instead.

Look on Cabelas. They have several of the Vortex scopes on sale. Hard to beat it.

First choice for me has been the Leupold VX3 4.5-14. Also good, and particularly good for the money, is the Burris FFII 4.5-14. I'm sure a Zeiss Conquest would do fine also. And a decent 4-16 would suit you fine. Lots of folks make a good one. I had one in a Nikon Monarch, but I really wasn't that impressed. And then it broke, so I went with Leupold.

Burris is running a sale on 2 FF II's, with a $ markdown plus a Rebate. I just bought from Cabella's & had it shipped for Free a Burris 4x14x42 FF II w/ paralax adjustment for $299 + tax, and will be getting a $100 Rebate back for a net cost to me of $218.

Are these a First Focal Plane & Mil/Mil Long Range Scopes like the high dollar stuff that the guys who regularly shoot past 500 yards and out to a 1000/1500 yards use...NO....but neither do I. 90% of the game I've killed has been at under 250/300 yards, even with a simple fixed 4x duplex that is the great average distance of kill shots for 98% of hunters I ever talked to. My best off hand shot, leaning against the fender of a Ford Bronco at a Wyoming Pronghorn was taken with a standard MV 257 Rbts in 100gr WW ST's at 2700fps wearing a 2x7x36 FCH Vari X II at 444 yards and taken cleanly with out a followup shot or any tracking needed. Practice with what you got is the key.

These Burris scopes have a Lifetime warranty, decent glass yadda yadda yadda and will work fine for the job they are designed for, as they have for me for the last 20 years. Go look at SWFA & Cabela's Bargain Cave on line to see what I'm talking about. I've put 1000's of rounds out of a series of 3x9x40's in the same FF II grade scope with never a flutter or losing Zero, or needing any repairs.

simple and I believe it's japanese made.

This scope leaves room for a seekins base and rings. What type of rifle is this going on?

Well, I found a Leupold VX-1 4-12X40 that I decided to pull the trigger on. Now I guess I'll go get the base and rings in a bit. Thanks for the scope suggestions!

Burris C4 4.5-14.4x42 is bad-assed... Free custom turret for your load if you will shoot long range. Very sharp clear optics for the price. Can get in 3-9 as well.
