I decided to take a trip to Choke Canyon State Park to look at deer and take a few pics. I thought it was going to clear off when the cloulds broke just before noon today. Well it did not happen and was dark all afternoon with cloud cover. Bucks moved late and place was really green. Saw a lot of does and fawns but very few bucks. This is the first buck I saw and he was walking through the mesquites and moving towards the south at a fast pace. I was not real sure it was a buck when I saw the top of the back in an opening as I was driving along. He was moving the direction I was driving at a good pace. I finally found him and took some pics as he moved along. He only stopped a couple of times, once in the brush and once in a small opening. He would not stand long and moved off quickly after he stopped. He was on a trail of a doe I believe. He had a great frame and only lacked a bit of tine length but still a really nice buck.

I road around for another 1.5 hrs and finally found another buck. It was very late by this time and I had very little light for pics. So they are blurry and not crisp. He was a really nice looking 5x5 with great browtines.

He suddenly went into an aggressive posture and acted like he wanted to fight off another buck.

I thought at any minute he was going to pound this guy into the dirt. He had the little buck back peddling the whole time.

I was shocked that the older buck did not just rush him and put an end to the thought of a fight. Never seen an older buck act quite like that with the rut just about to start(might have already started there). When he first postured and walked to the little buck I thought man I wish I had more camera light. I had the ISO had 2000 and 1/80 on exposure. I ran the ISO up to 3200. It was around 5:30 or bit later and really dark from heavy cloud cover. Was using 100-400mm zoom and a monopod. May make a trip back when I get some better sunshine one afternoon while the bucks are moving with the rut.
