Hi, there.

Still new to hunting, but I am after hogs in south east Texas pine/hardwoods.

Does seeing more deers mean hog numbers are not good. Also, I have not seen a snake yet, but heard my hunting place have lots of snakes.

Deers + snakes = no hogs? I would like to know your thoughts.

Thanks.

Good question, Navasot.

There are lots of foot prints - I am not able to tell deer print from hog print yet, but will research. Thank you for reminding me.

I did run into a hog up close, guessing it weighs 100+ lbs. I am hoping seeing one means a few more in the area.

If there is one there are plenty more. deer tracks have pointed ends and almost look like a tear drop. Bucks will have dew claws doe wont. Pigs will be more of a dull oval shape. Small ones will be just a print big ones get heavy enough to show dew claws

Thanks Hogman. That's what I read, hog eats snakes.

I have 2 hog bait rolling barrels up for months now, no action so far. Saw many deers and only 1 hog makes me wonder.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

ahh... got you..

I will concentrate on deer and consider a hog bonus for now. My bait barrel should stand a better chance in Feb/March before grass turns green.

Well I have way too many hogs and still have lots and lots of rattlesnakes, so I'm not sure they eat that many snakes. I also have an abundance of roadrunners and still have lots of rattlesnakes. If you are in Texas, I guarantee you have snakes. As for hogs, Deer, hogs and snakes all co-exist and while deer will generally not feed along with hogs, I see them do so at times, keeping their distance of course. I also see deer come in to feed just minutes after hogs have left the vicinity. Have you tried putting out a game camera? While deer are nocturnal, hogs tend to be even more nocturnal in my experience. Seems like 95% of my hog sightings on game cameras is after dark.

Great advise. I will get game cameras to know for sure.

I will also adjust my plan according to the 95% hog sightings being after dark. All my hunting attempts are during daytimes.

Updates,

Thanks for the great advises from the Texas Hunting Forum community. In case another beginner hunter finds this post, I am putting what I have learned in the following list - the order doesn't reflect priority.

(1) look for hog tracks.
(2) seeing one loner hog should indicate plenty more in the area.
(3) hogs, deers and snakes all co-exist.
(4) set up game cameras.
(5) A great majority of hog sightings on game cameras is after dark.

I started to apply what I have learned into practice.

While my "book knowledge" on hog/deer tracks was challenged in the field, I could and have positively identified some hog tracks. Also found newly rooted area near the first site. Put my game cameras in operation.

The real surprise came from checking on my 3rd site. I have a deer feeder there for 2+ months and it has been throwing corns. 2 weeks ago I checked on it, there was no activity of either deer or hog with lots of corns being left on the ground. With deer season winding down, I decided to add sour corns and hope for a better hog chance.

This time from a distance I noticed mud on the feeder legs. Getting a little closer a mud puddle under the feeder was obvious, this feeder was at a bit higher ground before. Then seeing lots of tracks.... lots of tracks... I felt overwhelmed.

cheers tis the good thing bouts texasHF. tis open for discussion. this origanel post had me ta thinking scratch got on Form in 2012, cause enjoy me time spent in the woods. do lot of hog huntimg for grillen & chillen. the math equation: Deers + snakes = no hogs? didnt add up. first lease, heard it had hogs. can hunt hogs 24-7-365 so got on lease. seen plenty of deer, lots of water mocasen & hogs. Not an Expert , tis hunting preasure that makes difference of what tis seem. deer & snakes not gonna kill off hogs. confused2 had heard corn & deisel bring's hogs, & deer wont touch it. some use it in their hog traps. have seen it work. always stayed away from using it. on texasHF some one posted deer will come to it. each their own. Not an expert scratch tis thinking hogs tis more nocturnal durring warmer weather than deer, & vice verse in colder weather. 2cents good thread up i got cheap posts. Edit: experts keep telling me hogs will be back rofl still waiting flag

Hogs love soured corn. You can also mix jello water and corn together and they will go nuts over it. Raspberry and strawberry flavored jello. I would try to create a separate set just for hog hunting if you do this, as deer will back off of sets that hogs wallow in and frequent.

Unfortunately I went to check yesterday, but hogs have not been visiting the site pictured above since last time.

They must come and go and they surly are not making it easy for me.
