I wonder if those are good to eat. Nice trophy! We're gonna find out. Have no idea what the processor will do when he asks "Buck or doe?" and I say "Neither. Desert sheep."

I wonder if those are good to eat. Nice trophy! We're gonna find out. Have no idea what the processor will do when he asks "Buck or doe?" and I say "Neither. Desert sheep." My desert ram was pretty good eating, despite him being an old warrior from Nevada's sage country. So was my Stone and Dall. (We enjoyed Dall tenderloins around 3 am after shooting him up in the cliffs right before dark and backpacking the horns and meat down some harrowing rock faces and shale slides in the dark. We were lucky we didn't break a leg, or worse. In retrospect, we should have siwashed up on the mountain until daylight.) But my Wyoming Rocky Mnt sheep tasted terrible, even though we got it off the mountain in panniers and in the skillet in less than 4 hours. I gave the rest of the meat to the wrangler. Maybe it's their diet, or genes, or period of the rut. But it sure varies.

Congratulations, that's a beautiful trophy and an adventure of a lifetime!!! I've only taken a dall sheep so far and haven't been real steady in applying for tags lately for bighorn or desert bighorn. How did you get your tag? Did you use an outfitter?

I drew the tag in the Arizona draw. I use Larry Altimus' Hunter Application Service-the tag fees are fronted and makes it much easier to apply in multiple states. This was my 13th year of applying in 10-11 states for both Desert and Rockies. Lightning just struck. Larry was also my guide on the hunt. I know everybody has their favorites when it comes to outfitters-but for my money Larry and his crew are at the top. Larry has taken multiple slams of sheep and guided hunters to over 100 rams. In fact, mine was his 128th. His knowledge and drive are second to none.
