What are the best fast growing trees to plant for our north Texas area?
Where's a good place to buy?
Thanks!!

I'm far from a tree expert, but I have come to the point in my life where I plant pecan trees instead of oaks or whatever. Shade in the summer, warm sun in the winter, and tasty nuts in the fall.

I do love a pretty Live Oak and would not cut one down if already growing. I've had Silverleaf Maple trees that grew pretty fast and had nice leaf colors in the fall.

Look at a local nursery first. If they don't have what you want just hit Lowes/HD/Walmart, etc.

Thanks for the reply.
We have four or five mature pecans and a hackberry already. We just have a few holes in the back yard I want to fill. Probably go a different route.

many people hate them but I will toss it out there.......Chinese Tallow trees........will grow from seed to 30 foot tall or more in just 5 or 6 years. They live 30-50 years and have beautiful fall color and dove love to eat the seeds

Let me know if you want some seeds and will pick you up some.....Mimosa is another fast growing tree with pretty foliage and beautiful spring blooms. Many consider it a trash tree too frown

Remember Pecans are a very slow growing tree. The sawtooth oak would be a good choice or how every you spell it

Live oaks are a good one also but are also slow. Shade all year is a plus

heck, plant you some red berry or mountain juniper (cedar) ... can't kill em in central Texas, no watering, grows in harsh soil, evergreen (brown dust in Dec.-Feb.) ... banana2

seriously though, Texas Ash and Spanish red oak are two that work well here in Central Texas, not sure about north??? We usually go to our local nursery for their recommendations. They tend to stock stuff that grows well in their local area.

What about fruit trees??? like peach, pear, plum, apple (if far enough north). again, check with local nursery to insure you get the right type based on chill temp and duration.

Call Willow Lake Nursery, its there in Weatherford out on Mineral Wells hwy west of town, they should be able to answer all your questions and get you a good deal on whatever you pick.

Don't know if was said, but Hybrid poplar grow real fast and look like an Aspen tree and are in the same genus. Don't confuse them with cottonwood trees, many do since CW are also in the same genus. Plant them in a 2-3 set a foot apart and they look real nice.

We're considering anything.
From what I can tell the trees at the local nurseries are way small. We'd like to find something we don't have to let grow for 10 years before it's actually a tree.

I'll definitely check the nurseries though.

We like weeping willows and I love oaks. I just hate how slow oaks grow.

Our weeping willow has grown real fast too. I have it planted where the a/c condensation line waters it.

Water oaks are native to all of east Texas and are one of the fastest growing oaks. They "only" live about 70-100 years, though.

You want a fast growing tree huh? Plant you a few west Texas mesquite's. Never have to water or fertilize and they keep you in cook wood to boot. cheers

I would go with a Maple. They aren't the fastest or slowest growing, but are a hardy tree and provide good shade. They typically grow pretty quick the first 5-10 years and then slow down after that. The best tree for Texas is the Live Oak.

Oops, I just noticed you are in Weatherford -- so you are out of the water oak's native area. It's probably too dry for one there unless it was in your yard and you watered it regularly.

Hybrid Poplars live over 40 years, that is enough time to get another hardwood to some age.
