I built a 6.5grendel ar for deer hunting. Shot a buck with it this year. I wouldn't want to use a 223 because I don't want to limit myself on shots to whatever you'd be limiting yourself to as far as distance goes, but that's up to you. My grendel is sighted in to 700yds.

700 yards on a live 100 lb animal is a crack shot in anyone's book. No doubt you are more skilled than me if you're making shots like that. But to me the hunt isn't about taking 700 yard shots, it's about getting them in close enough to "feel" it. I want to be able to hear their footsteps and grunts. Call me old school but that gets my heart pounding and that's why I love the sport.

As explained to me in 1967 at FT Bliss the 223 or .556 was adopted by the Army for 2 reasons, the round causes more wounded enemy soldiers and the ammo was lighter. The first reason, for every enemy soldier that is wounded, it takes another enemy combatant to aid the wounded. If 5 are wounded, 10 out of the immediate battle. It's light, as an Infantryman in Vietnam we literally carried everything with us for days, food, ammo etc.. Our packs weighed on the average of 65 pounds, humping the boonies in 100 plus heat every ounce you carried soon felt like pounds.

The 223 is perfectly capable of killing a deer, millions have been killed by the 223 round. But it should not be used as "crutch" because of inexperience, recoil, noise etc.. Used by people that are knowledgeable and capable it can be a killing machine, but it shouldn't be used as crutch for the ignorant and less capable. up

I guess my ignorant, less capable gf and I will continue our ignorant, less capable ways, filling the freezer with meat taken but a crutch round that isn't good enough up up up

Or maybe I'll take my huge teacher's paycheck and buy her a brand new ar30r1 in .300 win mag. up up up

If the shot is good and your using the right bullet, yes, it will do the job. But with that being said, often the shot is not so good. Got a guy here that has a kid with an AR in 223. He asked if I would let his son shoot a deer with it. I not only said no, but HE!! no. At some point your going to loose a deer because of the small caliber.

IMO anyone that uses a rifle larger than a 223 for deer is giving himself an unfair advantage.

Took one of my biggest deer with a .223 @ about 60 yds. However, usually hunt deer with 30-06 or 270 Cal.
