I recently picked up a Remington 788 in 22-250. I put a cheap tasco 3-9x50 on because that what I had laying around. I plan to use this rifle as a varmint rifle. I have known nothing but 3-9x40 and 50 scopes. I've got a 3-9x50 Leopold vx-2 on my '06 and a 3-9x40 vx-r on my 270. What magnification range would suit the 22-250 best?

At the distance I shoot my rifle has a 4-16x44 Vortex Viper and I find it stays on 10 most of the time

On my 220 is a Leupold 6.5-20x50. Excellent scope. But 4-16 works fine too, and mine is a Vortex. And on my 223 is a VX2 in 6-18x40. The Leupold on the 220 is the best of what I have. And if you are concerned about shooting in dim light, that Leupold is top notch and so is the Vortex Viper. I shot a coyote a couple of nights ago, on a cloudy night, that was barely visible in the Vortex, but I got him. Was so dark that even though he only ran 10 yards, I couldn't find him with my flashlight in the time it took me to walk the 60 yards. I'm not absolutely sure I could have found the crosshairs in the Leupold, they are pretty fine, but I could see them in the Vortex (at 8 power).

3-9 will certainly work, but I prefer more magnification.

Currently a Bushnell Elite Tactical 4500 Mil/ Mil FFP.

optics magnification is not caliber specific...... its application specific

I run a Bushnell Elite Hunter LRHS 3-12.... as I routinely shoot it out to 1K on steel and it serves has the "house" hunting rifle for people who come to hunt unprepared..... ie don't have their rifles ready to hunt when they arrive

I have a 6.5-20x50 Zeiss Conquest w/Turrents on mine. It's an excellent scope for my 22-250.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I've settled on a 4.5-14x42 Burris full field to place on top of this rem 788.

I've got a couple of those scopes, and a couple of Leupolds of the same magnification range. The Leupolds are probably better scopes but are twice the price. The Burris is a tremendous value for the money. I used one of them on my 260 for an entire season of deer, pig, and coyote hunting and was very happy with it. Crystal clear glass and was bright even in the last dim light of the evening.

This rifle is going to be riding around in the truck alot and I for the price I payed for it I think the Burris is like you said a good value and fair quality with the mag I'm looking for.

I had a 22-250 on my varmint rig, but it was a much bigger gun than the 788. My 788's have a 3-9x or 6-18x40. Considering the size of the 788 I'd probably look at a 4.5-14x40 or similar. You can go bigger but it ends up being awkward on the rifle.
