I haven't done much duck hunting since I was a kid, but recently acquired a place that has a nice pond on it. Decent size creek nearby that always has a few wood ducks on it, and Houston County Lake is about 3 miles SW as the crow flies. I've been to scout it during the day but not at dusk or dawn. Any of you guys that hunt East TX give me an idea what to expect as far as ducks?

It will either hold ducks or not, if you see them on it all the time, it should be good. If you never see much on it, it's a bust.
I have seen large conservation ponds 1 mile apart that are totally different. One always holds birds and lots of them and the other never has more than 10-20 on it, never enough to hunt.

Don't count it out to soon either. I have access to a place somewhat nearby that has absolutely nothing during the first split but around Christmas time it really starts to pick up for some reason. Just cause there aren't ducks there now doesn't mean they won't be there later in the season. Keep on scouting!

That's pretty much it, public or private. If day 1 there are ducks in said spot, day 2 will be good hunting. And If day 1 there are NO ducks in said spot, day 2 not so good. You could get lucky on some birds moving through and gives your spread a visit, open morning BWT is good for this, you are sure to see at least one group of BWT open morning.

Need food, I do not see any moss growing, birds feed on the bugs In the moss. Or much flooded vegetation, shallow water, etc... Worth giving it shot, set expectations low, bring plenty of coffee. cheers

I know there's a few guys on here that manage ponds by planting certain types of aquatic veg for em. Might wanna look into asking some of their advise for next year if you don't have many birds this year

Cigarettes are like hamsters. Perfectly harmless til you put it in your mouth & light it on fire

I'd expect lots of fun. That is a sweet little lake. I just set up/built my first blind and I was like a little kid...I quickly realized that I had the opportunity to build the club house in the woods that I always wanted and an opportunity to hang with my buddies in it, and shoot my favorite guns. You'll find the same thing out too.
In that lake and you'll have a deer/ duck/ hog blind/ fish camp. Congrats on the land!

Thanks guys, plan on getting out there over Xmas just to sit and see whats moving. This is right across from our property and is the fullest I have ever seen it. Nothing has been on this property for 10 years, hope there's half as many birds as there are hogs.
