I'm an avid deer/turkey hunter with some experience with ducks on small ponds but have never hunted a lake before. I am taking my best friend and his father who are very ethical and safe but very inexperienced. I was hoping you ducking veterans could share some general tips for lake hunting that might help us bring em in close. We have 18 dekes and waders at our disposal and will be hunting lewisville, fork, or tawakoni (in case cover or water level makes a difference)

Lewisville is permit only. each permit allows one guest if you didn't already know. The water is down at all of the lakes. scouting is key to the big lakes you gota know where the ducks wanta go. it takes time to journey out to do this not just a trip or two. id recommend bringing a shovel w you. lately ive been packing a shovel using it to dig 4 shallow post holes. I use drift wood to place posts/long sticks in. I carry 3 things of cammo burlap and a staple gun also. I make a makeshift blind. the cammo burlap Walmart carries in their hunting section. works for me. im new to this duck thing too so don't take my advice...that's just what I do.

Very good to know about Lewisville permits, thank you! I like the blind idea a lot, seems quick and effective. From reading older topics on here it seems that the most important thing (like you said) is scouting, followed by keeping distance from other hunters, facing into the wind, and not over-calling

Sounds good but I suggest having the wind at your back. The ducks will work into your spread facing you this way.

Scout, scout, and then scout again! Trust me it will pay off on big public water. Get there early and be safe! Good luck to you!
