Yesterday morning I let the biggest deer that I have on camera walk. I don't know why, but I didn't pull the trigger. Fast forward to this morning, my eleven year old son is with me and he has never shot a buck. He has shot several does, and this year he really wants to shoot a buck. This morning the wind was really blowing and I told him not to expect too much. Around 7:30 a young six point walks in and he decides to let him walk. Then around 8:15 or so the big 8 walks out. He was very skittish and when he finally calmed down he had his butt turned to us. I told my son to be ready because he was only gonna give him a short window to take a shot. Sure enough the buck turns broadside and my son said he was ready. I gave him the green light, he squeezes the trigger and click....I didn't have a bullet in the chamber. My son looks up like what the blankity blank just happened. Of course the deer takes off. I feel terrible, but he and my wife have. been giving me heck, stuff like, "that might be the biggest deer I've ever seen, sure wish I would've had a loaded gun."

On the more important flip side, you where on the safe side handling a unloaded firearm, just a mental lapse we have all done at one time or another. Live to hunt another day up

Omg! Back when Obama took office the first time and ammo was flying off the shelf, there was 1 box of 243 rounds they were like 7.00 dollars ! We were invited to a ranch, my son was 9. 10 point drop tine walked out @ 30yards he pulls the trigger on his single shot! And click !!! We were loaded , pin left indention in the round just never fired! Two days later guy pulls into local restaurant with same deer scoring 148! But it's our conversation piece every year in the deer blind!

Sucks, but if he's old enough to hunt he's old enough to know that when someone hands you a rifle the first thing you do is check the action, doesn't matter who it is. I'd chalk it up to a learning experience and get on with more hunting. I bet he won't make that mistake again! Hard way to learn it, but better than the other.

edited to add: I also understand, you were sitting there with the rifle in your hands the whole time and handed it to him to take the shot so checking the action wasn't in the cards at that particular time. Still, lesson learned. Roll on.

No, he just looked at the gun and then me with this what just happened look. It's all good now, he is looking forward to getting back out there on Sunday. We came to my mom's for Thanksgiving and he has made sure that the entire family has heard the story.

Mistakes happen. You shouldn't worry about it. I'd be more worried about his attitude. Did he not even whatch you load the gun? He can't expect you to do everything but pull he trigger. The responsibility for the whole thing is as much his as yours, and either way he needs to be respectful. He'll get another chance at a good deer one day and you can bet he'll watch you load it.

Trying to get my youngest daughter her first buck, I told her to wait until a very nice eight jumped out of the feed pen. Pen was about 60 yards away. While waiting, I dropped the large binoculars on the floor of the blind. We got her buck in the next year or two, I forget, but it was 13 points. She still hasn't let me forget dropping the binoculars though...and I dropped them about 15 years ago. 'Sorry Bud. Then again, I don't think the Scottish blood was diminished one bit between her and me, so she does hold grudges a wee bit long.

A few harsh words but I agree 100%. Your son got a good and safe lesson in how he can be held accountable for his actions, as well as those of others. And you got one in the value of teaching it to him.

More great harvest opportunities will come no doubt. I also suspect a few dads who read this will now hold their own kids responsible for making sure their gun is loaded and unloaded at the appropriate times, rather than putting that responsibility solely on themselves.

Be worried about what attitude...? Were you there? Not trying to be rude but seems like a good father son relationship to me..the 11 yr old looks up as if ..what happened? He's 11...geez..then, the family is joking around about the experience ,saying I wished the gun had been loaded etc. Sounds like the description of a good kid to me but...maybe I'm reading it wrong but I don't think so...
With that said, I was 13 or so and was hunting alone and did the same thing ,forgot to put a round in chamber on my 30/30 and had the click happen on a nice buck.. I've never made that mistake again and have shared the story with my kids and we laugh about it. Great memory's happen when taking kids hunting and some that will last a lifetime! Like not loading a gun! Haha.

Yes I don't see any "attitude" relayed in the story.

IMO as much of a bummer as it is, that's what makes this sport so surreal and exciting. Its the stories and experiences that we cherish forever! My dad did it on a 300" Bull Elk one year. Accidentally put a .270 in his .300 win.
