Had the opportunity to hunt on a good friends place in Lometa this morning with a green light to shoot a doe or spike. Decided I was gonna take my 2 1/2 yr old son with me since he has been talking about shooting deer constantly since the season started. Seriously every time I walk in the door he ask me if I shot a deer LOL. I told him a few days ago we are going hunting on Tuesday and every day since he ask me if it was Tuesday yet.

So we wake up at 0430 this morning and as soon as i wake him up he smiles and says "we o deer hunting?" I said yep so get up and lets get dressed. He grabs his toy gun and we get in the truck and head for the ranch. We meet up with my buddy and drive at the ranch around 0600 and get settled into the blind. Little man was cold so I wrapped him up in his Ninja Turtle blanket and he was sitting in my lap as the sun came up. As soon as the feeder went of the does poured in. Must have been 15 does with 3 that were noticeably larger than the rest. Shortly after the does showed up a descent 8 point came charging in and chased a few doe around. He stayed for a few minutes ate some corn and then chased a doe a few hundred yards away from feeder until I lost sight of them. We sat and just watched the deer for a while and little man was asking all sorts of questions and I kept having to tell him to whisper but thankfully the deer never spooked then all of a sudden he yells "daddy a buck" I look over and sure enough the 8 point was back and only about 15 yards from the blind staring at us. He sniffed the wind and then walked back to the feeder. At this point some of the does were leaving so i decided it was time to pop the big ole doe. I put little man in a chair and told him to get ready for the shot. That doe must have stood behind a tree for 10 minutes without moving before she finally stepped out and presented a good broadside shot. I put the crosshairs right behind the shoulder and squeezed. She ran about 20 yards and pilled up. I looked over at little man and his mouth was wide open. He said "daddy shoot a deer" and had a huge smile on his face. Im not sure what emotion it was but I just started laughing uncontrollably. I was excited, proud, happy all sorts of emotions going through me when I seen how excited he was. Little man says "lets go get her daddy" we get down from the stand and he takes off running and beats me to her. I was thinking in my head dang I hope she is dead and don't jump up LOL. We had gave her time to expire and I checked her with binoculars but the thought still ran through my head.

So proud of my boy and so happy to see how excited he was even know it was cold and early in the morning. I can't wait until he is old enough to pull the trigger and can't wait to spend many more years hunting with my little hunting buddy. By the way as soon as we get home my wife asks little man if we shot a deer. He says "yes but daddy no shoot a buck." This kid cracks me up with the things he says and the facial expressions he makes while saying them. It might just be a doe but this is a memory I will remember forever.

Got his toy gun and ready to go

Excited to see a buck

Here is the 8 that was chasing. Pretty nice 8 for this place due to lots of pressure in the area. Will be nice if he survives the season.

he was balls to the wall at first and then as he got close I think he seen that blood trail and the blood by the Doe and kinda slowed his roll.

That's what it is all about right there. My boys are 28 and 23 and that is still why I love to be out there. My 23 year old shot a doe this past weekend and it made my day. It don't get no better. Congratulations!!

The first deer I saw my dad shoot was a doe. We got out of the stand and I had my BB gun with me. Dad told me to stay with the deer and make sure she didn't get up while he got the truck. By the time he got the truck and got back to me she had about 40 holes in her ear from me "killing" her again.
