Dad hasn't been feeling all that great this year, he had Heart surgery in Feb., his heart is fine now, but he has had a touch of Bronchitis, so he hasn't really felt like going by himself so I told him I would run out there with him over Thanksgiving weekend & be there at least to help if he kills one.

I haven't been on a Deer lease since about 2003, I have only quail hunted since then except for just a few times. My question is, when are the bucks chasing does in this area? He is right on hwy 16 just a mile or two north of Loving. Great lease and he has killed a couple of decent 10 points that would hit around 120-130 and a couple of nice 8 points but no monsters. Should I get out and rattle any? I would really like to call in a nice Buck for him on this trip, since he's threatening to let his spot go after this season but more than likely if he does, I will pick it up anyway.

Will listen to any opinions / suggestions.

Also, our Quail lease is in Oklahoma, so I haven't bought a Texas license in like four years, I don't need a license to just be there right? What about if I go off to the side of his blind to rattle? I won't have a gun, but still not sure that's legal. Prolly should just get a license.

only need a license if you plan on hunting/shooting (rifle, bow, pistol, etc.) ... just going to sit a stand with your dad, or even rattle, grunt, etc. you don't need a license. I would suggest you not carry even a sidearm though. Might be worth the $25 resident hunting license fee for insurance (in case a bunch of hogs came out where you both could shoot).

The license is cheap enough and will stop any questions. You are 10-12 miles W of me. I was out last weekend. I only saw one buck, not a shooter. My TC's from last week showed does still together and even several bucks at the feeder at the same time. However as is normal for this time of year we have seen some new individual bucks show up on camera and not seen some that spent the summer on my protein feeder. I also had some pics of a bucks and does and in each one the doe was blurred from movement as if intent on not being there with the buck. They are definitely on the verge of the serious part of the rut. I am going to rattle this weekend. I can also tell you that our biggest bucks have all come the first weekend in Dec. Hope that helps and have great weekend with your Dad.

I am. I might decide to sit in a stand by myself if I none of the other guys on the lease are there. Or may be riding around on the Mule and get a shot at a hog or something.

spend the time you can with your dad!!! I wish mine was still around as we spent a lot of time in the woods together early in my life and then late in his. Best memories!!!

drinking beer from a mule while hunting ... is that a double negative to where it cancels each other out??? bolt

Mule's are so bumpy and make the beer foam, then they want to stop and eat, poop it's never ending with them...stubborn too

I hunted a couple of miles from you this past weekend. I didn't see any bucks chasing this weekend, but one guy noticed a big, wide buck running a doe at noon. He was going out to check a feeder and saw the doe bust out of the brush and the buck was hot on her heels.

The pigs on the other hand, they are out of control. I jumped about 20 of them around 1pm Saturday afternoon and shot one that went about 130 pounds.

Been hunting that exact area and I'm sad to say there hasn't been much movement at all. I have a couple of does coming in regularly in the pm. I have only a couple of pics of bucks although atleast two of them are shooters, but coming in at night. I haven't seen any hogs and no pics of them either. I hope you can get your dad something good!

Don't worry, you can ask anyone that has ever hunted with me, I'm a picture taking fool. I can't tell you how many birds I have missed over the years just because I'm always walking up to the dogs on point with my camera in my hand snapping pics and when they flush, I let go of the camera and try to shoot (camera is on a lanyard that is around my wrist) it's pretty comical at times. Thanks everyone for all the info on the area, and I hope y'all have brought us some mojo, I'd like to see him whack a monster.
