I have a 4 month old chocolate lab male and have been working with almost everyday. He sits when he is not too excited, fetches, and releases.

My question is, is he doing good on progress or is he behind? What are something's I need to also be working on with on at this time.

I will be taking him duck and dove hunting hopefully next year.

Ok what are some ways I could do that, buy a cap gun to start of with and then work my way up?

Don't just shoot it next to him. Have the dog out running or doing something he enjoys and pop off the cap gun and act like nothing happened. Do it at a distance and slowly work closer to the dog. Also work up form the cap gun. Go slow and act like it is normal and you shouldn't have an issue.

I used the DT Systems Dummy Launcher, it uses 22 cal blanks in several power loads; launches the dummy as far as forty or fifty yards (farther if you use one of their plastic dummies), and by the time my pup heard the 28 gauge for the first time it was like he had always been around shotguns.

In fact get someone else to pop the gun while you play fetch with your pup in a distance away than in time work closer More than just 1 day of it

I would say get a retriever training program and stick to it. Once your pup is 6 months or so. You may want to look into some puppy type programs to prepare him for that also. Gun fire is one small aspect to the big picture

I definitely agree with the program but I would recommend not doing gunfire introduction now. Your pup is still very young and there is plenty of time for that. At your pups age I would recommend Hillman's puppy video. Jackie Mertens Sound Beginnings is also great. Both will fit with all other programs but I recommend Hillman because it is easier to follow if you have a lack of time and resources.

Good luck

Don't stress, she's only four months.
Mine will retrieve and sit and whoa at doors and swim at almost five months but I haven't gotten serious at all with her. All play right now.

Has anyone read retriever training by Tom Dokken, would it be a good read and a guide to training?

What are some other things I can do or read to help train my pup?

I will definitely look into that, I am not too sure if I did join if I would be able to make very many meetings with living over an hour and a half away and with working, but I will definitely give it some thought.

I live @ P.K. so I understand the drive...I've made about half the meetings. We typically train once a month, a lot of times in Sanger. I'm not really a club kind of guy, but I stepped out and gave it a try and really glad I did. I've already got a better duck dog and we tried hunt tests and got our started title.

I'm looking at the Lonesome Dove charter, if they are setup in Eastland, I may look into joining there since that's where my wives family is and its only an hour away.

Dokkens book is pretty good for puppies. He does a lot of exposure type training and also starts teaching handling early with place boards. It is a pretty decent read for a one dog owner that is chomping at the bit to do a lot with a young puppy but is far from a complete program. It seems like a lot of irons get put in the fire without a lot of solidification of skills. There are far better basics programs out there.

What are some of your recommendations if you don't mind me asking?

Like I said in my previous post I recommend Bill Hillman and then either Smartworks or Total Retriever training. I prefer Smart works for the first time trainer.

Look at Freddie Kings video's on youtube. He has an entire program similar to Mike Lardy and Evan Graham's. It's a very complete program and it's free.

Hard to train without bird boys, other dogs and LOT's of experience.

Train with a PRO

If you are serious about training your dog to hunt, retrieve and honor other dogs. Do these things

You won't find all you need in anybody's book. just my opinion
