Hey guys,

Whats your recommendation for a mouth call for beginners? I have a pot call that I'm doing OK at making the right sounds with, was interested in learning a mouth call. What's the typical learning curve like?

thx-

jeff

Work a bit with someone experienced. I've found that the sonic dome diaphrams are a bit easier for starting out. They have an arched rubber dome over the latex reeds.

Also, you should know that all pot calls are not created equal. I got a lot better sound out of those when I traded for good custom made pots, and threw my store bought one in a drawer.

Thanks Scoop. I'll look for those. Nobody on my lease really turkey hunts so I'm learning by trial and error, w lots of error.

Funny how store bought is never as good as home made. Some things never change.

Turkey trumpet or a wingbone would be my choice for mouth calls, but in reality I would prefer to go with a good box call before either of them.

Thanks for the advice. At some point i thought I'd have to go hands free so i thought a mouth call was what most folks used. What is the ranking of the different types of calls as far as being useful?

Diaphragm, pot and peg, box, locator calls.

Call Scott Hooks at Hooks Custom Calls and tell him your situation. The man is a wizard with mouth calls and can recommend the right call for you to start.

I use different calls for different needs. A box call is easier to get a bit more volume and reach out to them when they are not close. I switch over to a pot call when they are talking and coming in closer. Easier to sound the part and make a variety of puts clucks purrs and yelps on it. I am not the best with a mouth call, but I like using it along with my slate to give my calling more dimension. Sometimes I mouth call over the top of pot calling to make it sound like multiple hens. Mouth call is good when the toms are in close and you need your hands on your weapon. Just need a few subtle sounds then if any.

I know locator calls can be useful, but on my place I've had no luck with em. Usually do better just yelping with a box call and they answer. I know pretty much where they roost, and don't have tons of acreage to run and gun and search for them. I do have a crow and owl call and use them but turkey out there don't seem to respond. We also have lots of crow that caw frequently, and I never hear turkey shock gobble from them either.

Try a coyote howler, and if all of those don't work, then I use one of the can of air powered horns. Trust me..it works when nothing else will.

I may try the coyote, but I guess the real issue is I've just had limited need for one since yelping on a box call usually tells me what I need to know. I have them patterned fairly well on my place, and they are usually fairly vocal. If I were on a larger, less familiar piece of land that might change the game, though. Right now shock callers are just something to keep in my vest and lug around so I feel like a better turkey hunter. elmer

Don't overdue it... especially if you get a bird in close.. soft calling has always worked best for me with mouth calls

I use the inexpensive three pack personally. It was fairly easy to learn to use. I have used those for years in conjunction with an owl hoot and a slate call. I normally use the owl hoot in the morning to get them to gobble then use my slate for soft calls. I use both calls to see what they respond to. Some birds gobble better to the slate and some to the mouth call. The nice thing about the diaphragm is that its hands free so you can have your gun up when they get close.

Primos True Double and True Double 2 hands down the easiest mouth calls to use for beginners IMO

Mouth calls just take practice.Just go to store and buy a pack of primos or flextone or Knight and hale mouth calls and practice with them. In your car when driving or you will alienate your friends and family. LOL

PS I also use Hooks Calls like mentioned earlier. They are easy to run.

Tom teasers, legacy or hooks. The production stuff is ok but look at these in that order
