Never been hunting so excuse me if this is common or whatnot.

First time I go Ill probably be sitting in a blind waiting around. But do many of y'all hog or deer hunt offhand? What kind of rifle do y'all use in those instances, besides an AR style.

If I'm walking around stalking and glassing I carry a lightweight Remington 700 in 7mm08 and use a Bog Pod. Either that or a TC Encore with a bipod.

Nothing at all wrong with that question. A lot of people can't "offhand" hunt because they don't have enough space to do it safely.

If you feel you have enough land to spot and stalk (the more typical term) then it is a fun way to hunt. I would say hunt with a rifle you can bring to aim quick, some folks prefer open sights for that reason but if you have a scope that you can shoulder and fire quickly and comfortably then go for it.

Maybe a larger caliber for better knockdown? And I would always use shooting sticks.

Personally I don't take ANY running shots at game, so being able to use wind and cover and low noise clothing footwear is important.

Nothing quite like sneaking up on a white tail and seeing them while they don't see you.

4 main tools that are essential to success unless your a sniper:

1) Ranger Finder--distances can be hard to judge in certain terrain.
2) Shooting Sticks--I would of had a lot more bucks on the ground if I would have hunted with shooting sticks in my younger years.
3) Binoculars with good glass that aren't to heavy around your neck.--Can make sure you don't wish you could take the bullet back when walking up to your dead deer.
4) Safari Sling-- Will keep your rifle in a position that you can quickly get on the deer, and your hands free to use binoculars, range finder, and shooting sticks.

I use a 270 bolt action rifle shooting 130 grains. I like this rifle for great knock down power and a very flat shooting gun out to 250 yards without much holdover. I will take shots up to 400 yards.

Hunt a cross wind, not directly into the wind. You will pick up more animals this way instead of them moving the same direction you are in front of you or behind you.

When I was walking/stalking, I carried a Savage 99 in 243 caliber, open sight or a 30-30 lever action open sight with scope over it. Our cedars are so thick a 50 to 100 yard shot is about maximum.

All my walking and stalking was done without a rest, I simply had a sling and binos. A good sling is very important and knowing how to use a Hasty sling will benefit you greatly. I practice this technique a lot, so for me it's second nature. I also don't hesitate on moving shot out to about 250yds.
