Some of you may remember December of last year I got the hunting dog I have always wanted. I flew out to pick up my field bred golden retriever and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Cannyn (pronounced canon) is my sweet golden girl, but also an amazing retriever. I sent her to a trainer for awhile since this is my first hunting dog and lack of time, but thanks to my trainer we have both learned a lot. I hope to get her titled out in AKC and HRC. We already have two Started Retriever passes and two Junior Hunter passes. Below are pictures from our hunt tests and today's hunt. You can tell she looks thrilled about her first duck and the temperature...

Here is her first retrieve story. Got skunked on public land Sunday, she sat quietly in our blind the whole time though and trudged through the thick brush on a very hard walk in spot. Today, I got stuck with a spot I did not initially plan on, but we adjusted and settled in. A lone mallard hen came from a weird direction considering the wind, feet down and I popped her (thank goodness). Cannyn did not see the bird since I had her blind set up facing where I thought the birds would come in from. The duck is floating out quickly into big water with the strong wind. I line Cannyn up for a blind retrieve and after a little bit of confusion she finally got on the line and I was able to handle her for a very far and tough water blind through cover. Had she not been trained on blinds the bird would've been gone. I was nervous about the distance for a second, knew she had it in her. As she grabbed the bird and was on her home stretch I felt like I might cry. It was a very hard first retrieve, but she did great. Only one duck today, but it will be one of my most memorable hunts. We are both ready for more birds this season now that we have that one under our belts.

Thanks to this forum for all of your help. I would love to help answer any future questions about goldens, field golden breeders, or a retriever trainer recommendation (since mine is awesome).

Great story, pics and a beautiful dog! You just got bit by a whole lot of 'bugs'.
Are you a member of a retriever club? If not, we'd love to have you at Cowtown HRC.

I am going to eventually join a club. I almost got a golden from one of your members, Kindall I believe? Gallo gold. But the timing just did not work out.

When and where are your training days? PM if you want

Thanks for sharing the pics and story. How much does she weigh and do you have much trouble keeping her coat clean? I have a golden too, not trained but wanting to learn more.

Honestly, I have not had as much trouble with her coat as I was expecting. Maybe 2 burs that I had to pick out from 3 long walk ins. I guess it depends on the actual foliage that we go through, but no issues so far. The shedding in the house you already know about, that has been the only downside. After our last hunt I did not even have to bathe or brush her. She got in the water once to get the mud off and once she dried she was clean enough to be in the house.
She is a little under 50 lbs right now, between there and 45 depending. Which I feel is pretty typical for female field bred goldens
