After seeing posts over the weekend about a lot of buck activity, I went out today to our place in Hood Co and saw 3 different bucks on a fence line working does. First time we've really hunted this area and they were working those girls like crazy! Looking at the 10 day forecast, its only going to get better!!!!

I'm close to Hood county. I've seen bucks cruising but I think we're still a week or so away from the doe being ready. Bucks are ready. This rain shut them down for us. Of course tomorrow I have to head back to big D. Solunar tables say that next weeks 'new' moon phase will have game activity that will be off the charts. Who knows?

Pre rut? Actual rut will be around the 15th Yep that's right usually around the 15th it is on big time but this year the pre rut has been harder than usual on the Hood/Erath line the bucks were chasing harder than usual even the big one was chasing but two or three miles away in my Palo Pinto co spot it was quiet have barely even got pics lately, on my Hood Co ranch they tend to breed really late I get a lot of pics of late born fawns every year and have seen major rut activity as late as December 10th.

Most of the time i see them in heavy rut around 10-30 to 1-00 when most are not in the woods !

Rookie question, I have not had much experience hunting the rut each year. After speaking with some people, they keep talking about rut being in full swing, and that's should bring for urine out this weekend. Is it too soon to be doing that? I hunt out near Putnam, Tx (near abilene) for anyone familiar with the area.

My experience in Hood and surrounding southern counties the first new moon in November triggers the does to cycle. The following two weeks it's on

Opening weekend in Mills county nearly every doe I saw was with a buck or got checked by a buck. It's definitely heating up.

Pre rut? Actual rut will be around the 15th your right actual rut you won't see jack and they are locked down That is so true all I hear about especially on the hunting shows is the rut and how great it is rut rut rut hunt the rut. Well I do hunt the rut and every other day of the season and I dont get excited about it anymore during the rut hunting is 10x harder, sure you might see a big buck get careless and expose himself for a shot he usually wouldn't but I'd much rather hunt pre rut and post rut I see so much less deer activity during the actual rut because the bucks are usually chasing, not eating, or shacked up with a doe they could be up to 10 miles away at any time. Personally I can't blame them if I only got a chance to get some action for two weeks a year Id go insane too. My favorite time is the post rut where the bucks are tired and need to eat they will move earlier and hot food plots and feeders during the day time on ocassion.

At my place in Erath County, I didn't see much pre rut at all last weekend. I rattled in a 4 point, but all the doe I saw had no bucks trailing them. I would love to be out there this weekend to see if things have changed, but it's the wife's birthday. I'm sure there are brave men out there that would try to ask to get away for that, but I'm not one of them.
