I'm going on a Mt Lion hunt in Colorado in December. If I'm fortunate enough to tag out my question is...has anyone flown with a frozen animal hide? I called the airlines and they basically said "don't know". It would be skinned and rolled up and frozen. anyone have any experience with this?

I have transported hides and meat on airlines many times. Make sure it's frozen solid, tape end of cooler shut, if TSA cuts tape to inspect they will tape it back up. No ice or dry ice is allowed in cooler. Use hard sided cooler no styrofoam. Check to see what paper work you need to transport the lion hide across state lines, I do believe the lacy act applies to lions.

I had my hide nice and frozen along with the meat, take the meat it is delicious. Bought a Rubbermaid tote from wal mart, that way in case I was not lucky I did not haul cooler for nothing. Duct tape the heck out of the tote and took as checked luggage.
I needed no other paperwork. I went from Utah to Vegas and back to Wisconsin with hide still nice and cold
Good luck

To legally leave CO with a lion it will need to be inspects and "sealed" by the state DNR. The lion cannot be frozen until it's inspected.
I would encourage you to have a taxidermist lined up before your hunt. They will be able to let you know how to prepare your cat to make their job easier and get you the best looking mount.
I've flown with pelts/capes as checked luggage and as carry on before. No problem.
I did get some special attention from TSA when traveling with a frozen bobcat in my carry on luggage. Officer just said "on the way to your taxidermist?" and I replied yes. He then showed off the X-ray image while laughing.
Good luck on your hunt. A mountain lion hunt with dogs is on my bucket list.

If you can't get it frozen before you leave, drop it off at a taxidermist and have them expedit it for you.

If you can't get it frozen before you leave, drop it off at a taxidermist and have them expedit it for you. This is what I did, shot my second lion on the first morning, early, and didn't want to wait around for it to freeze. They froze it and shipped it to my house in some sort of cold box with dry ice. Dont quote me on this but if I remember correctly it was around $100 or so via FedEx.

Your guide may have a freezer you can use. Or as odd as it sounds I stayed at a hotel in Alaska one time that allowed me to use a freezer.
Good luck if you have never been on a lion hunt it is a blast. It is amazing to see such an animal in the wild.

Only advice I can give is that you better make sure everything is perfectly legal. Work with Colorado dnr and home state dnr. The fed gets $ signs in their eyes when you cross state lines with the tiniest of errors. Sign something in the wrong place and it can cost you up to $500,000.00 and 10 years in prison.
And that ain't no joke. Google Lacy Act if you doubt me.

As others have stated, just freeze it, bag it and put in your luggage. I have done it with a pronghorn antelope, no issues. I have several friends who frequently hunt sheep across seas in those countries that end in -stan. They boil the meat off the skulls, get as much meat off the cape as they can and salt them before flying all the way home with them. They arrange for fish and game ahead of time to meet them at the gate to clear their veterinary and (if necessary) their cites permits. Flying a mountain lion to Texas will be a piece of cake compared to that. Just make sure it isn't dripping blood.
If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today...

Nice, I hunted with Fred two years ago. Good guy and a hard hunter. I bet he didn't sleep more than about two hours the 3 days I was there. Guy is a true mountain man. I hope you are in shape, keeping up with that guy is tough. He can scale those mountains like nothing Ive ever seen.

Yea I got one, a big female. My only gripe with him was that he didn't discourage me from shooting it. We thought it was a smallish male or a big female but we couldn't be for sure as she was so high up. Looking back, I wish he would have urged me not to shoot. I was just too excited and I was also sore and run down by then so I was wanting to get a cat...any cat....on the ground. I should have waited, and he should have told me to wait. But it was still a ton of fun looking back. Just don't let him talk you into shooting a questionable cat, because he will try if there is one in the tree. He tried to get me to shoot a large female we treed on the 1st morning. I don't blame him, its a ton of work for everyone on these hunts and he wants to keep his success rates up, but there are too many big toms in that area to shoot females and small males. We must have cut 8 sets of tracks in 3 days of looking. Dont get me wrong though, I harbor no ill will towards Fred, he's a good hunter, I just think we both should have been more selective.... I went back to the same general area the year after with a different outfitter and shot a big tom on morning one. Here a couple pics of her
