Let me start by saying I do not want to start a heated debate on hunting ethics because I am an ethical hunter but I am also want to enjoy what I kill. With that being said Thursday I am going on a trophy hog hunt and a meat pig hunt and I was wondering about the Trophy boar. They said Ill have a shot at a 300+ pound boar and I was wondering is there anyway to make them taste good. I have read mixed reviews and some people say bleed them for a week and some say stay away from eating them completely. I mean I dont want to waste the time and resources to eat a boot. I will definitely boil the head, through some peroxide on the skull and make a nice shelf ornament.

try again. have heard 300+# boar not good ta eat. have gotten 200+# boar took backstraps, they were allright. preperation would be key. have taken 300+# sows, they were okay. my my posts are cheep best wishes on hunt

if you are going hunting at a place that specializes in big hogs...the hogs may be barrowed (castrated) it causes them to attain greater body size and I've heard for whatever reason it causes their tusks to be larger. and also in this case...I've heard they're notably better to eat. there's a lot of places now that buy large hogs that were trapped or otherwise caught and then release them into hunting enclosures. many times these hogs are barrowed before release.

a 300lbs boar with all his parts in tact though....not at all what I'd consider very good table fare. some methods of preparation may be better than others. but I think most will not be that good. it depends a lot on how sensitive you are to things tasting "gamey". there's folks out there who eat possum and coon. they'd probably like 300lbs boar hog. our family eats more wild game than they do anything else. tons of deer and hog both. we do not butcher any of the larger boars. they all go to the bone yard. if we've got lots of sows...we won't even butcher the smaller boars.

i'll state the obvious too....if you're wanting that skull as a shelf ornament...don't shoot him in the head.

take a .270 or larger caliber rifle and plow him thru the middle of the shoulders. it'll plant him where he stands. will leave your trophy head nicely in tact.

I have always had my big boars made into breakfast sausage if I am going to eat it. The spices in the sausage will drown out most if not all of the "gamey" taste that some complain about. I am not that sensitive to the taste so I don't even think twice about it.

Since my processor charges a flat rate for a hog no matter what size it is then it just means more sausage for my money if its a whopper of a pig.

I can't explain the science behind it, but I've done this on larger hogs and it works. After u kill it, gut it, skin it, and quarter it, put the meat on ice in a cooler like normal, but add a cup of vinegar, lemon juice and or some fruit juice that is highly acidic. Let it soak into the meat and melting ice. 24 hrs later, drain the cooler and repeat the process. I believe the acidity in the vinegar tenderizes the meat. And after doing this for 2-3 days the meat won't taste gamey.

most of those hogs are fed protein regularly, when they reach that big they usually have an off flavor. Best just to use as a filler for sausage

most of the bigger hogs, boar or sow, have been doing some raiding corn feeders. i know, my english is bad, hey, my posts are cheep 2outa3 agree. its your hunt, U have the final say. lots of people shoiot hogs & leave em lay, or pile em up. some use the excess hogs ta Help feed the poor, Hogs for a Cause proublely spelt it wrong. best wishes, safe hunten
