for a bit more you could get a razor 11-33...not as much magnification but small and light

If you want good glass and durability, Leupold Kenai is the better bet IMO.

You got to shop around for the Vortex HD "under" $500...most are mid 5's to mid 6's.. Alpen 788 is a good scope for well under the $500 mark. The Pentax PF-63 is also very good.

If you want a mountain spotter, it has to be compact, light, and tough. My Elite has been on five sheep hunts, a goat hunt, and anywhere I have to carry a spotting scope in my backpack.
