For a kids first duck hunt using a youth 870 20ga would quality #6 work better at close devoting big duck? Or would#4 he will be using an improved cylinder choke.

I'd go IC #4. My son used that combo for a couple of years until he moved up to 12 ga. Killed em just as dead, big dux too.

Those Hevi-Metal 6's are awesome for decoying ducks... I wouldn't hesitate to use 20ga Hevi-Metal 6's. If you aren't, then go with steel 4's...
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Thanks guys. Taking a kid tomorrow that hasn't shot a lot. If all goes well he should get plenty of shots. I did see quite a few BWT today.

The biggest pellet I would use would be #4. There are two things you get to teach him. Smaller bore shotguns are just as effective when the shot choke combos are correct. You also get to teach him that over the decoys shooting is the game instead of just shooting at passing birds.

Well kid used #4 shot and shot about 20 rounds dropped 2 birds. Unfortunately they both fell where they couldn't be found. Teal were coming in so fast from behind us he couldn't get shots at a lot of them. 90% of all birds we seen were teal and none showed any sign of decoying. They were flying with in 30 yards. So tomorrow morning I think I'll set him up with #6 shot. I'll keep #4s around incase big ducks start showing up.
