Not sure how old your son is...but let him sling some lead!!! Great buck for a kid

I have a few, Jack is 9 he shot 2 culls last year and we're thinking of letting one of the kids shank this one, not sure about the deer, he's on the edge of being a buck with good potential and being a buck that looks like a cull. I know I'll have to have three hands to keep his gun down if we see it.

I would call him 4.5 and in a couple of weeks (maybe even by now), he will look more like a 4.5 Little leggy in those pics and not much neck, but muscle tone and width on the brisket is a little much for an early season 3.5 imo. But I have been wrong before You have any day time pics of him?

So have I, the last one Jack shot last year I had the jaw bone sent off to get aged, my estimate looking at the deer was 4yr old and the test came back at 5.5 - 6.5, so who knows. I've always herd 7 is the magic number for maximum antler size (their peak)..Don't know if I believe that or not.

I think alot of it depends on your location, but in prime conditions, 7.5 would be the magic number. On my place, 6.5 seems to be the magic number. Antler growth is tricky though. I have seen deer make a great jump at 3.5 and then level off, just adding a little mass and maybe some minimal length through the rest of their life. Others seem to just grow each year. Some make the jump at 4.5 and have seen some make a tremendous jump between 5.5 and 6.5. I have some deer that the antlers look no different from 4.5-6.5 and if I took the date stamp off, you would think they were all from the same year (except for the body). With all that said, for a deer to reach their max genetic potential, 6.5-7.5 is probably the age IMO

Some deer are at their peak at 7 some peak out at 4 years old. I would personally let that buck walk, teach the kids to lay off the trigger and let one of them shoot him in 2 years to show them what age can do.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I don't think I could ever tell my daughter no on an animal. (Once she is old enough that is, don't think a 6 month old will be shooting for a while!)
Maybe if it was just a beast of a buck that I knew I would get a chance at in several years... but even then, I don't think there is a better feeling in the world than making your a child's day.
Would this be your boy's biggest buck? I would have a hard time saying no to a 9 year old.

Let your son shoot that buck if the opportunity arises. He is at least 4 and with daytime color pics might even show to be older. He is showing lots of muscle in the brisket. Good looking buck.

I say shoot him.
I think once a deer hits maturity 5.5 the conditions rain and available groceries determine when they peak, not one specific age.
It's hell eatin em live

Sounds like it would be his biggest buck, so let him take it without hesitation! There's no guarantee, or even good probability, that your son would get another chance at him in 2 years. If as a general rule you let him take bucks that are his biggest-to-date, he'll pretty soon be at a point where the only bucks he'll be shooting are older class deer anyway. Good luck!

Let the boy dirt check him. He will be so excited that it'll erase any doubt in your mind.
