In Australia, pretty much the only type of deer hunting with the bow I do is still hunting. I've tried a bit out of trees but never had any luck and getting a treestand into Aus is hard and expensive. Which has lead me to just still hunting, not a high success rate but still good fun.

Just wondering if anyone else does and if so how they find it compared to hunting from stands? thinking of trying a bit of stand hunting over the summer looking for meat, mostly to stay out of reach of snakes.

Wow,the sporting goods stores over there dont sell hang-on or climbing treestands? That's strange. I occasionally still hunt when I'm hunting with a rifle but it's near impossible to sneak within bow range of a Texas whitetail,at least in the places I hunt. Oh, and I dont blame you for wanting to get off the ground,y'all got some nasty snakes over there!

I always give it a go every season a few times. Especially the rut when the mature deer tend to not hit the feeders as much. A good leafy suit and quite stool in a brush line is how I do. I haven't been very successful always busted by the deer u don't see while UR watching and waiting in another. But I love to try. I'm headed to the ranch for 6 days of hunting this week. And I will definatly be trying a still hunt. I think it's as fair chase as u can get and the ultimate bow hunt challange. IMO
Hogs worry me more than snakes when on the ground. A big one won't turn and run if he walks up on u most times.

Yeh it's a different world over here. Only a couple of specialty stores sell tree stands and for the same one you guys pay $100 for it costs us around $400, I bought one through ebay from the states but when it came to ship its dimensions were too big and they had to refund me.

I think we do it so much because pretty much all our rifle hunting is still hunting (we call it stalking) so when people go to bows we keep doing it the same way. I've shot my pb fallow that way but that may have been as much luck as it was skill!

Here's my only still hunting buck so far, taken last feb on a a 107 degree day.

I do both. I like to sit in a stand (or ground blind) from sun-up until I get too fidgety or too cold. I like to still hunt late morning. I killed a doe last weekend with my bow doing just that. I find that you have a higher chance of being busted still hunting, but at the same time, you see more game.

Nice.Putting a stalk on a free-ranging fallow is an impressive accomplishment, congrats. Still hunting might work better over there because unless there's something to funnel the game under your treestand you'd be wasting your time.

Heck we built our own stands for years. Hang on and ladder stands. Try that.

The last 2 does I've taken, and the last doe I missed, were basically just walking into a stand of trees and leaning against a tree. I seem to have much better luck doing it that way than being in a treestand. I NEVER see deer from a tree stand.. However, put me on the ground and I'll do much better.

Ladder stand have always be my favorite, but after my car crash three years ago I still can't climb very good because of some of the loss of balance, I had a traumatic brain injury.

I'm super happy with my Double Bull blind, last week I had a younger buck in bow range for almost an hour.

I still have a ladder stand in my garage I never finished building, I'm using it for a rack.
