First bow kill, First black bear hunt, and First time to Canada. This awesome hunter from Justin, Texas drove to Nova Scotia, Canada to experience his hunt of a lifetime. I wasn't sure how to post the video to this post so I will give yall the link, fingers crossed it works. His reaction is the reason I started guiding, simply priceless. He came as one of my hunters but left as a great friend. I hope everyone enjoys his video as much as I do. Here is the link.....

Nice video but hearing the bear screaming in pain with his "death moan" took the fun of watching the hunt out of it for me. Then brag about it. Don't really like to hear or see game animals suffer as this bear did. Might be a Canadian thing. Prefer to DRT the wild game I shoot. No pain, no suffering.

Dave, I have to 2nd a little of what you're saying, somewhat disturbing to hear that animal dying. I much prefer the more immediate type kill, however I know that I've not always had that happen for my all shots. May also be my unfamiliarity of how bears react to being shot. Thinking the moaning is pretty typical for bear especially when shot with arrow. Was a nice shot with clean pass through.

Death moan is typical of bears...means you got a good eithical shot...very few instant kills with a bear...also a death moan means you are not at risk of being mauled/killed during recovery efforts by the bear you shot.

Dave, I understand that the death moan isn't easy to listen to, but it looked like a very good shot and couldn't ask for much more. I didn't feel like he was bragging at all...just very happy and giving thanks to God for a good clean kill. Congrats to the hunter and outfitter.

When bow hunting bear there is essentially no such thing as DRT. Think of the death moan as the text book donkey kick that a whitetail does with a perfect cross body arrow. It means a good ethical shot followed by quick death followed by a short recovery. Looking at the video the bear is hit at the 1:30 mark, moaning starts at 1:54 and is finished at 2:15. That's a dead (or at least unconscious and no longer suffering) bear in 45 seconds with 21 seconds of moaning. About as good as it gets when bow hunting bear.

Similar to the donkey kick in deer if the moan is absent the shot may still have been good and the recovery may still be fast and easy but maybe not. However its presence almost always means a fast easy recovery with minimal suffering to the animal.

That is exactly right....this guest took the best ethical shot of a great bear hunter. This hunter was not bragging about hearing the death moan, he is joyous that he made a clean kill and that the bear did not suffer. The death moan sounds like the bear is suffering; however, like Hirogen says, it all happens in less than minute. Even with a rifle it would not have happened any faster. The only difference between harvesting a deer and a bear is a deer, for the most part, does not make a noise and, in some cases, may suffer a lot longer than a minute before retrieval. I could not have explained it any better than Hirogen. Cheers and stay safe everyone

DQ kid, you are absolutely right. The death moan is somewhat unsettling but to all experienced bear hunters it is a sign of a good clean, ethical shot, meaning the passing of the bear will be very quick. It is not often bow hunters get to experience it as you have to hit the bear in the perfect spot. Most inexperienced bear hunters think the vitals on a bear are the same as they are on a deer and that is where the unethical shot is made and the bear will suffer before passing. This guest had never hunted bears prior to this trip; however, he listened to me when explaining the anatomy of bears and studied the pictures of the anatomy of a bear prior to starting his hunt. Kudos to him on a good ethical harvest.

Thought I would share with everyone where the vitals are on a bear, can you see the difference between it and a deer?

Just goes to show that there's a lot more emotion in taking game than most people understand. I see it as a sign of respect the hunter has for the game. Well done!

I have made and deleted posts on this thread a couple of times. The death moan combined with the hunter's reaction causes a conflict of response within me that I can't completely define.
