Going hunting for axis this Friday and Saturday! So excited! I'll be hunting in Hondo/Castorville, hopefully I'm going to bag a nice plump doe! food

Also going to be breaking out my 20. Gauge from its hiatus. Any axis within 80 yards is toast!

Thick brush in a lot of places. Used my 300. Always before on them, but since most of my shots are 60-80 yards I decided to give my shotgun who's been collecting a lil dust a go!

If I owned the ranch you were hunting on and you showed up wanting to shoot an axis doe at 80 yards with a 20 gauge shotgun I would not let you hunt. Do yourself a favor and bring a deer rifle also.

don't shoot a shotgun.

that is ridiculous. bring a rifle, shoot the deer in the neck and enjoy some fine eating

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Its actually very do able...when I lived in Maryland you were not allowed to hunt with rifles and people shot the deer with 12 ga.slugs out to around 100 yards.....I like using a rifle because its precise and accurate but I dont see anything wrong with using the shotgun.

In VA we have several counties that do not allow center fire rifles. In my particular county we were allowed to use buckshot or a muzzleloader....no brainer there. Then we were allowed to use slugs a few years ago. I bought a 20 gauge rifled barrel for my ProHunter. Using Federal Premium 3 inch Barnes 5/8 ounce tipped Expander Slugs (federal stopped making those) pushing 1900 fps I have shot deer at over 100 yards and am confident out to 150 yards without thinking twice. I can shoot cloverleaf groups off a bench with that gun/load at 100 yards and have shot 200 yard metal targets as well. So assuming someone is shooting the right shotgun (rifled barrel) and a sabot slug, an 80 yard shot is not a problem. For a smoothbore shotgun....that's another story.

Absolutely!!! I see folks saying "Ok" on this thread citing examples on whitetail. Clearly have not been axis hunting. It is a BAD idea to use a shotgun for axis. While I admit their could be certain circumstances where it could be pulled off, it is contra indicated for a paid meat hunt on a axis doe - stupid really.

Why? Let me count the ways:

(1) Axis travel in herds. And they often feed tightly packed together. If using buckshot, you are going to hit multiple animals. Heck, I've been on axis hunt with a rifle and watched a herd of 25 for 45 minutes and never could get a shot.
(2) Axis sometime come to feeders like whitetail all nice and neat. But more often they are more cautious and your only opportunity will be longer than 80 yards. You're on a paid hunt, why severely limit your success?
(3) You're meat hunting - a slug or buckshot is going to rip up too much meat.
(4) Axis are tougher than WT by far. I've made perfect heart/both lung shots on axis with a .308 and STILL had them run a couple hundred yards with no blood trail. While I have no doubt a 20ga slug could bring an axis down at shorter ranges - the lack of precise accuracy and longer ranges over 50-100 yards, and the rapid loss of energy is likely mean a wounded and/or lost animal.

Man what happened to just giving the guy a "good luck".. to each his own..... I've helped look for whitetail that were shot with a 300 wsm...accuracy and knowing your rifle...20ga..no problem if you do your part. If i went to a paid hunt and i couldn't use the firearm of my choice..guess what. I won't be giving you my hard earned money. Good luck and post pics later!!

So now we can stop ragging Kobus on using a shotgun. Congrats.

And BTW, I think a few of the poster on this thread need to check up on how shotgun technology has changed over the past 10 years. The new sabot slugs use premium bullets (similar to muzzleloaders) and most shoot 1800 to 2000 fps. They are more like muzzleloaders than the shotguns of old. Not a 300 WSM rifle but adequate to cleanly kill and axis deer or elk at under 150 yards.
