Hi all, My hill county lease has chiggers, if i don't spray down with mosquito spray it's an itchy mess. During off season it's no big deal, but I went out for the bow opener with nada and now am scratching. Any suggestions on something to keep them away without leaving a huge scent trail? I figured bug sprays and sulfur powder are out. thx!

sulfur powder or Sevin dust, just use it year around and they will get used to it being in the area... I also put out sulfur salt blocks for the game to help reduce ticks, deer or hogs don't seem to mind when I dust down knees down.

I guess that applies to anything that has a smell...

Sawyer Permitherin is one of the best with the lowest odor. Been using it for 2 years now and can't be more happy with it. I have had mature does within 20 feet of me on several occasions.

Another vote for permethrin. It won't help with your present infestation, but if you apply it to your clothing prior to hunting, it will prevent the next attack of chiggers (and ticks).
Permethrin is NOT labeled for use on human skin....clothing only. But since you can spray puppies with it and not hurt them, I have always gone ahead and sprayed my ankles, waist and arms. Of course you're on your own here.

Another vote for permethrin. Never had a tick or chigger when the clothing was treated with it. Doesn't totally take care of the mosquitoes but does help with them also.

I've heard of people putting flea collers on ankles to prevent getting ate up. I realize this doesn't help now and I don't know how much truth there is to it but just throwing it out there.

A lot of horse fly spray has permethrin in it . But you can buy the concentrated permethrin ,get a spray bottle and add water per instructions . It doesn't smell so you can spray down your clothes. Also heard of people recharging the thermocell pads with permethrin .

For a quick solution, get clear fingernail polish and have your significant other dob the bites with it. Once it dries it seals air out and the itch stops.

Go by the vet or farm store and buy some fly tags for cattle, the ones that go on the cows ears. Zip tie one to each boot. Also hang one from the deer feeder so they will be use to the smell. Good luck.

Hi all, OP here...
So a lot of these remedies seem like they have a scent- cedar oil, tea tree, sulfur powder. I'm new to this, my 2nd season.
How sensitive are the deer to these sort of smells if I haven't been using them throughout the year? I don't chew tea tree toothpicks in the stand because I thought they would have too strong of a smell.
I can see how cedar oil might be a 'natural' smell but not sure what's safe and what they would bust you on. I'm already making enough newbie mistakes, want to avoid what I can.

Earlier this year, my yard was 3x worse than I've ever seen it. It hasn't been an issue at all, in the past. But 10mins in my yard this year and I would be hating life.
Straight up off worked as a preventative. And 2-3 sessions with rubbing alcohol would stop the suckers, if I was too stupid to remember the off. I know Rubbing Alcohol isn't an exotic trick, and some say there are issues. But really, it works for me... but I had to use a lot of it. Once things dried out in the yard, a couple weeks without rain, and the suckers were pretty much gone. Worried they'll return, now that we're wet again.

What brand do you use? Spray or liquid? I've got to try some because I am really sensitive to chiggers, have the bites for 3 months.

Lots of different stuff out there to use as a preventative, I use permethrin or OFF but the most useful preventative I've ever found is a pair of high Lacrosse rubber boots. I tuck my pants inside of my rubber boots then tighten the top or if you can't tighten I use duck tape, then spray your clothing. Also, if possible, try not to squat down too much in the bushes. I do a lot of this sometimes scouting, bend over instead. I have not had chigger issues since I started doing this, and those rubber boots won't leave any scent behind which is especially important bow hunting or scouting to set up a bow stand or blind. I hate chiggers.

We use a sulpher sock and it seems to work well. I haven't seen it affect any of the deer we hunted last season. We wrote an article on it a while back. http://www.lsonews.com/craig-nyhus-28/

Funny none of the bug spray people haven't come up with an insect repellent with deer scent or a cover scent. I knew this one woman hunter that used ground blinds and she sprayed all the surrounding scrubs with bug spray. When I saw her doing it I almost split my side laughing but she never had a bite.

I knew this one woman hunter that used ground blinds and she sprayed all the surrounding scrubs with bug spray. When I saw her doing it I almost split my side laughing but she never had a bite. She probably killed the biggest deer, too. Meanwhile, all the smart guys who were wearing scent-lock clothes and using odor eliminating sprays all zeroed for the hunt, I bet!.....
