I asked this in the general hunting forum but probably should go here also.

Do mounts in South Africa or ship back to USA? Right now I am just planning on South Africa. My outfitter uses Taxidermy Africa.

positives and negatives of both please.

I've always had them done in the states. Woodbury's, Wildlife Gallery, and will be using Huffaker in Abilene, TX for this last batch. Can't really speak to the pros and cons. There's great ones and horror stories on both sides of the ocean.

Bring them back to the states. It's just hard for the african taxidermist to get quality supplies to mount your trophies right

I always tell our clients to bring back your hides and have them done locally. If there is a problem or you have questions you are right there and able to go to the shop and talk to the taxidermist. If they are done in Africa you have absolutely no control over what is going on with your mounts and the shipping costs to have mounts shipped back to the US are going to cost you every bit as much as if you would have done the mounts locally in the first place. Personally I have yet to see high quality mounts coming back from Africa. There always has been an issue of some sort.

I wish we would've had them done in the states.

They don't look bad, but the details aren't the same. I will say, they did very well on the Kudu, and the birds turned out decent as well. They are doing high volume mounts too, and not necessarily spending as much time as needed.

The tanned hides turned out very well though.

My only major complaint was they switched mine and my dad's warthog orders. I had a great warthog that was getting shoulder mounted, and my dad's small one was getting the European. When we got them, it was obvious that they got that request backwards.

I have had my mounts done in S. Africa. Never had a problem and the mounts look great.
