Should I buy a Browning or Remington 30-06 automatic and bolt action? I have not hunted in quite a few years and I use to use a 243 auto, but do not have that rifle anymore. I want a good all around hunting rifle and was torn between the auto and the bolt action.

Hard to beat a good str8 shooting bolt action. I had a auto 30.06 back in the late 70's early 80's, but don't see many guys using autos much anymore. (outside of black rifle hog setups).

Last couple of Remingtons I've bought sure lack the quality of yester-year too. I bought a remy 22-250 and the bolt handle just fell off on shot 5 zeroing the scope, wont buy another.

I'd go bolt action. For hunting they are hard to beat. Depending on price range would be the deciding factor for which gun.

Thank you for the reply. I think I may go with a bolt action!

I have both and use the auto more than the bolt, simply because I like the way it shoots better. I have a newer model of the same auto that I will not take out of the case because it shoots inconsistent and haven't found a bullet it likes. Bolts are more accurate and consistent and hard to beat. Good luck and welcome

I'm a bolt action guy but if I were you I'd go to your nearest retailer and hold, shoulder and aim both and see if a particular model fits and feels better to you. Good Luck with your choice. Baker

I would go bolt action, and out of the two brands you mentioned I would get a Browning or an older Remington. I'm with Western on the Remingtons. I used to be a big Remington fan but I don't care for the new ones near as much. If you want a short action cartridge, a Remington 788 would be a good choice if you can find one. I also have a Browning A-Bolt and a Tikka T3 Lite and I can't say enough good things about either one of them.

Good luck getting back into it. I'll second (or third, or fourth, or whatever) the "Bolt" recommendation.

Either a Browning A or X bolt or a Rem 700 would do you just fine!

Rifles tend to be pretty poor in the lower price range and you kind of get what you pay for. The value is in the mid price range from about $500 to $800. After that you are buying a name or a fancy finish. Less then that and it's hit or miss on accuracy and reliability. I like Remington, but have to admit they disappointed me with this latest safety recall. They seem to be taking responsibility for it and handling it properly, so I'm still a fan.

For every story you will ever hear about a bolt action rifle failing, you will here dozens and dozens about the autos. Misfires and shells not ejecting being the most common. If you take your time and squeeze the shot, there isn't any reason for a quick follow up shot anyway. And if you missed the fist shot, what makes you think you will hit it when it's running away?

Keep it simple.

Eddie

i would for sure go with the bolt action. Do you have your mind set on the 30-06? I personally would go with a remington 270 very smooth gun. I love mine. But everyone has their own preference! Best of luck to you on your future hunting adventures!

God Bless
