Although I have the Howard Leight R-01526 muffs on my "wishlist", if you're hunting in hot weather and need to hear a PH/guide, I been very happy with these: Sonic-type earplugs They take just enough of the edge off, I've never felt a "sting" after the shot. Of course, I'm not an audiologist.

I use the howard leights for now and they work pretty good. But I am going to try out some digital buds when I can from sport ear.

Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff, they are $47 on Amazon. They are $44.89 apiece on eBay with free shipping. Bought two, so the kids that hunt with me can get used to wearing the earmuffs.

I bought a set of four for my family and we had an excellent couple of days of dove hunting without a worry about our hearing. The hearing protection really enabled better teaching and kids' learning about dove ID, shooting techniques, and safety.
Well worth the price paid. Actually, you cannot put a price on those memories.

I'm a little concerned this year because I will be deer hunting with my 44 Mag for the first time. I would like to have ear protection but don't want it to interfere with the hunt.
I'm not sure what I can use, I sure don't want a big set of muffs on.

Academy has the same ear protection the army gives us. It is green and yellow one side is for small arms the other for larger weapons and explosions. With the small arms side in your ear you can still hear pretty well just prevents damage from really loud noises like gun shots.

I use Peltor Comtacs. Someday, they will break and I will replace them as my primary. I also have the Howard Leights and Peltor 6s. the quality of the sound is better with the Peltors, but the price is much much higher.
I don't like the turn-on knobs on the HL or P6s. The muffs get turned on accidentally in the gear bag and the batteries run down. I don't have that problem with the push-button activation on the Comtacs.
There is no reason not to have hearing protection. Maybe such would interfere with your hunting back in the 80s, but not today.

Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff, they are $47 on Amazon. Big +1. I own 3 pair, and the best one's for the money. Do NOT get the Peltor $60 one's. Biggest POS. The electronics went out the first time I used them and had lots of hissing and humming.

Killer, you must be right handed shooter too. My left ear is blown with constant ringing. My right ear isn't quite as bad, but it rings too. I always carry earplugs in my pocket and have them sitting on the sill of my blind. Before I shoot I (1) put the binocs down-(2) install my plugs-(3) grab my gun (4)curse myself for pulling the shot
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I have been using Zem Hearing Protection since they first came out. They are light weight, you don't know you have them on, you can hear normal conversations but when you shoot they block all sound. I wear them around my neck when not using them if I remember to. And better yet no batteries to worry about. I really don't know I have them on. They just flat out work and are low cost as well. http://www.nrastore.com/nrastore/ProductDetail.aspx?p=SA+302&ct=e
