Interesting trip for sure this year.

My number one priority was elk, I figured timing wise per past years calendar I would nail the rut. I would soon find out unfortunately, that the extremely dry weather changed up the patterns and location of the elk.

Not that it would matter because I soon scoped up a stud mulie that I decided would be me goal very quickly. He was a main frame 5x5 with deep front and back forks. He was every bet of 180 and most likely even better. He was still in velvet so I thought he would be pretty predictable. I ended up playing cat and mouse with this deer for the whole week. I can honestly say I think I pulled ever trick I had, even sat a water hole for 10 hours only for him to bust me at 3yards down wind. I even cut his track and tried stalking beds mid day. Spent hours behind the glass trying to pattern him. My hit list evolved in to three deer- king(velvet 180's 5x5), pitchforks' running buddy(solid hard horned 160's 5x5), and key hanger( massive 3x3 with lots of junk). Oddly enough I ended up with shot opportunities on all three deer in 8 days of hunting. But I came up short, except on the last 10mins of the last day.

It was a rough week, the next few pictures will give you an idea of fun and non explanatory issues that just seem to pop up on the mountain.

Day 1 big kitty following bull elk, very fresh track

Day 4( with two brand new tires one the back)

Now I'm in Mexico drinking a beer taking it all in. I should hear from the insurance company next week on what happened with the truck.

Simple on the miss, was all me.

We had this buck patterned pretty well. He was running with three other bucks. About every third day he would show up in the same draw(exact same draw I shot my deer last year). He had been Mia for two days so we knew it was about time for he to make his circle and show back up. Made a stalk and took a 50 yard shot quartering away. I didn't get a full pass thru but did break through off side shoulder blade and break skin. After the shot he went on a death march for about two hundred yards. Basically dead on the shot but no body told him. He sprinted to his death. He went down in a deep draw. We had fun getting him out. Basically carried him out over our shoulders. I learned a lot this trip. Things are always changing on the mountain wether it be the wind, weather/rain, or even the habits of a deer immediately after he rubs. I tracked a hoof print 3 miles only to have the wind change and bust me in the last 60 yards on a bedded stalk.

The greatest thing I relearned was that you can't fix or change things, you can only adapt. The quicker you come to terms with that, the easier life is. No matter what happens at the end of every day and the beginning of every morning is a sun set and sun rise so unique and special that it over shadows life's little problems.

Events like those are what makes a hunt an adventure and provides stories to tell for years to come.

You know what they say. The difference between an adventure and an ordeal is attitude. Sounds like you had a heck of an adventure. Congrats on the muley! Very nice! The fact you worked your keister off for it has got to make it even sweeter.
