I am fairly new to white tail hunting and I am not sure if this is a deer I should harvest so it does reproduce or it will be a better deer next year. I have heard that if it is this big of a spike it will always be a spike but i do not know for sure.

Personally, I'd give him another year, unless you just want some meat in the freezer. He may have been a late fawn, but I don't think he will get to what a similar buck would at that age with 6 or 8 points. Some guys would bust him on site, so YMMV

While I am for shooting spikes, the once/always argument is almost completely false. There are a myriad of reasons that a deer could be a spike. Age, range conditions, age/condition of mother, injury, genetic predisposition to grow body before antlers, etc. can all be factors other than just being a genetically inferior deer. This deer, while not having more than two points, has a decent amount of bone on his head. If you need to reduce numbers, and you have other yearling bucks that exhibit more desirable traits, you could certainly take him. But if you have low numbers or take very few deer every year it would not hurt to let him age.

The once a spike always a spike conversation ... which I agree has been mostly been disprove ... is in reference to yearling/1.5 year olds. This guy appears to be a 2.5 year old, although it is hard to tell with half a body ... but I call him 2.5 and a cull. Shoot asap.

No, you cannot "harvest" that deer. You can, however, kill him!! The only thing I ever harvest is what I planted in my garden!! Don't think I ever planted a deer!!

I'm not one to shoot spikes just because they are spikes but I would shoot this one if I wanted the meat. Looks like he is a 2 yr old and much older he won't be that great on the table.

If you have the tags go ahead if you want to. Don't ruin one of your first deer kill experiences trying to practice the trophy buck koolaid of what other people think.
