After so many seasons when dry weather made food plots a bust, I'm beginning to wonder if it will be too wet to plant this season. I've been working on my plot for several weeks now (mowing and spraying), and yesterday I was able to disk it with the intention of planting this weekend. Those plans are now on hold until I see how much rain the area gets.

Guess it depends.

For use there is no such thing as too wet. Our property is 90% sand the wetter it is the better it is to drive on. You could plant in a driving rain if you wanted to. Being wet right now would likely help the deer would be focusing on natural growth, but in mid/late winter when it dries up and the natural food in mopped up your plot will be their and have had a chance to establish itself.

Our 2 big problems with food plots are

1- the obvious lack of rain
2- get grazed immediately after sprouting

It do be flooding. I'll still plant this weekend regardless. I have a feeling the rain frequency won't let up until after season is over.

I brush hogged a month ago and fought dust
I plowed and disked 2 weeks ago and had 1/4 " of dust on me when done.
Ive got 950lbs of Triticale thats going down this weekend rain or Shine in 4x4

Being too wet can also mean respecting landowners by not creating deep ruts with tractor tires while getting to and from your plots, or getting a tractor stuck and creating an even bigger issue. That's why I took time off yesterday to level areas hit hard by pigs and disk. Now I can go back with the ATV once things dry up a bit and plant.

I hope your wrong. I have never seen as much rain in 8 years as we've had this year,. It looks like spring time on our part of the ranch in southern Dickens county. Just rained another 4 inches yesterday.

Kind of how it's been for us, I never recall seeing that much rain over the Summer, and it rained most of yesterday and still coming down this morning. Had several weeks in late may-June with 10". Haven't had to put out any hay and feed bill is a faction of the norm, so leads me to believe this winter is going to be really wet and really cold.

Okay. I'm planning to plant a plot this weekend as well, but a little different. My blind sits on the edge of a large winter wheat field. The landowner plants it for grazing, but doesn't let cattle on it until about Dec. Since he's not harvesting it, he's fine with me planting a food plot as well down around my end. He does all the discing, etc. and broadcasts his seed. As such, I don't need any equipment to plant. It's been darn dry until about 2 weeks ago. They planted the wheat earlier this week and I was planning to go this weekend and just broadcast my deer food plot mix over about an acre. I'm not a farmer, but I'm curious if we could get too much rain. If the seed is down, can you flood it? Sorry for the ignorant question.
