What are you all using to bait these traps? I have been using marshmallows. 1 in the trap and a couple on the ground. I only have 2 traps. Catch 2 coons the night when I first set them out. Takes a couple of days to catch more. Are they so smart that they avoid the traps once they see their brothers/sisters trapped?

I use dry cat food with dry milk replaced mixed with it. works pretty well. depending on how many coon you have caught, you might be thinning them out enough for it to take a while for more to come by.

Move them a few feet. You might even want to wash them after a few catches. I use cheap cat food and a shot of vanilla or butterscotch flavoring. Coons got a sweet tooth too. Dollar a bag cookies work well usually. Smash them up good and make the coon work for them. I use jack mackerel during season, but you will pick up more skunks and possums with a loud bait. I've seen it where one bait would work well at one place, and 3 miles down the road, they would ignore it. Play with bait and location, you'll figure it out. You might move them down the trail aways if you know where they are coming from. Always set on location and sign though.

I think any kind of critter can get spooked after 2 or 3 of his buddies get hammered. A lot of times though, they are shy of the location and not the trap. That's the thing about trapping though-every situation is different!

Cleaning and moving them after a coon is caught has been the key for me. I think the trapped animal leaves a lot of distressed smell on the trap.

Coons are back attacking my feeders. Cleaned the traps this morning. Moved them from the original spot. Didn't have any sardines or cat food but did have a few old Girl Scout peanut butter cookies to use. See what happens tonight. Will report in the morning.

The coons are coming to corn.
Use corn for bait.
Coons will climb, destroy and exercise extreme Houdini moves and acrobatics to get corn, why use anything else?
I have caught over 300 coons in the last few years and I just grab some corn from the feeder and dump it in the BP trap or cage trap.
If a coon was robbing my pantry I might consider sardines or cookies for bait. My concern with using something other than corn is; I do not want to attract coons to the feeder. But if they come for corn, I know exactly how to catch them.

Will give corn a try tomorrow night if the cookies don't work in my Duke traps. Just never thought they would attempt to get a handful of corn out of a Duke when they have it on the ground around my feeders.
