SO I have been afforded a great oppurtunity to hunt an area that is loaded with WT for bow season. The land owner said he doesn't mind me shooting does, spikes or even cull bucks. SO that being said what constitues a cull buck in your mind? This is not an AR county and I will ask for more clarification from the land owner, just had me curious as to what interpretation of CUll Buck is for everyone else? Thanks

Cull bucks mean different things to different people, I would go by what he says.

Honestly in your situation a free hunt is a free hunt, I would probably just shoot a doe anyway to avoid the chance of ruffling any feathers.

Yep thats what i would do because to some a 150'' is a cull that jsut dont have what they want on their place and your doing it for meat then doe's are better anyway.

As was stated above, one man's view of a cull buck can vary a great deal. You have the right idea by asking specifically what the landowners idea of a cull buck is and that's all that matters for this situation.

I would check with the landowner a 100% on whats a cull to him this is a cull on are place but maybe a trophy to your land owner we have 3 of these 7pts running around and no one wants to shot them there is 5 of us on 6k acers and only 4 of us deer hunt, but my son and wife are going to take care of these for us this year.

A cull is a buck that has demonstrated genetics the manager doesn't want further spread.

So it's possible for a super wide 6pt to be a cull most places, but not others. i.e. A particular region may be overweighted in population of bucks with poor spreads, so even though he's only a 6, his wide spread is coveted and he gets a pass.

That's how I look at it.

Talk to the landowner to get a feel for what he wants taken out.

Thanks, I kind of figured it differs on who is looking at it. I will definitly talk to the land owner and weigh on the side of caution a buck shows up.

Maybe I am a total rook but those 2 bucks that you posted Branden would be dream deer in my opinion. Thank you though, and if your ever looking for someone else to come out and burn a tag on those horrible deer this guy is in!

Lol, yes, a cull depends on where your hunting. I hunted a ranch down south in 05' where culls were being taken in the 150's, one older 9 pointer grossed 160". That's probably not the case where you are hunting, so just get clarification from the owner and don't have any "Uh Oh" moments.

We are allowed to take two bucks at our ranch one must be a cull. Some guys bring in a 12 and try to pass it off as a Cull

Yeah I don't really see a 160 inch 9 pt as a cull. I think most 150 inch 8 pts make it to trophy status don't see why a 160 inch 9 pt doesn't...

Sure it may meet one criteria of a cull, say it only had 8 or 9 points, but what it makes up in other areas I think bump it out of the cull arena.

Funny how everyone shows off their extreme examples of a cull... in the pic above he labels the 8pt, a pretty looking buck, probably better than your average 8pt and better than what a lot of people look at year in and year out, a cull, but what about the cabbage head crab claw 7pt on the right? Bet that is a MUCH more typical cull than the other. To me the goofy crabclaw 7, big 6's etc. are the definition of typical cull bucks. The 160 gross 9pt is an extreme example if a cull at all.

That 8 is a cull on are place I can show you dozens of that size or bigger and that 7pt is the same crab claw in the first pic, I was just stating that those are culls to us and to him and probably many others those arent culls they would be trophies.

Troche the first picture closeup makes him look considerably bigger but your right they are the same.

My point is still the same, you got a guy asking about culls and people are throwing stuff like this at him. Maybe im the only one, but that 8pt has drifted out of the cull class and would be a management buck. Whats the difference? call some outfitters, im sure its a grand or so.

I agree with you on the difference on the management side, yes he can be considered a management buck. Thats why I stated need to see what his land owner considers a cull cause each person looks at it differently.

I think that MOST folks would call all of the deer shown here as "management" deer. I killed my largert deer last year, a 4.5 year old 8 point that grossed just over 130. I have passed on several 3.5 year old 10s that would have scored just as well if not a little higher in hopes that they would make it to 4.5 or 5.5 years old. One of those was eventually killed by my nephew as a 5.5 year old 160+. If given the opportunity, we shot big 8s to let the almost big 10s grow ... in an effort to manage the genetics of the heard. I would NEVER call a mature 8 a cull. I would reserve the term cull for 2.5 year old spikes or one of those that looks like the comb on a roster.

Me neither however on this ranch anything not a 10 or better was considered a cull.

All depends on who you are asking...My best advice is go with what the landowner determines is a cull

Think you can/Think you can't/Either way you're right

Definitely make sure to get a precise definition from the land-owner. Those culls would be "trophy class" on my property. Unfortunately hunt in an AR county. Have huge, thick body 4+ year olds with 8-10 points and 12" spread :-( Racks go straight up. Seen several with crab claws. Unfortunately the genetics will just keep getting passed since not legal to ever shoot and they are the dominant bucks. No such thing as a cull in my area.
