Someone told me that if you take a west Texas Mule Deer that TPWD has special rules because of the CWD research. But I couldn't find anything on their website.
Anyone know anything about this?

I have taken a few over the last few years. I've had the GW call me on one of them and ask my permission to allow him to take brain tissue from the deer to test for CWD. It's only been requested of me once in the last seven years. They did not contact me on any others including the one I harvested last year.

I have only taken 2 and it was never mentioned by the ranch manager/outfitter at the time. Just south of Van Horn.

I think that this is what your referencing link This is exactly what they are referencing. If you are not in the containment or high risk zone it's not mandatory. I shot one last year outside of any of these zones and volunteered to have it checked because TPWD was set up outside my butcher shop and I had no objections to it. Once again, it was totally voluntary. The TPWD officer asked what she could and couldn't do with my animal. I was only going to get a euro mount so I agreed to allow her to cut into the base of the skull and get tissue samples from the brain/spinal cord. If I had not agreed to it she wouldn't have done it. Very positive experience. TPWD did a great job and is just trying to monitor the CWD situation. No harm no foul.

Thanks guys - that's the info I was looking for. I'll be hunting in Hudspeth county in the containment zone. So it looks like I'll have to bring it by a check station if I get lucky.

Is that still active? The link was a 2013 article, so surely if the program was still ongoing there would be a 2014 news release from TPWD, no?

Check the date of last years release Oct 22nd. If you go to the county regulations it will tell you if you are subject to a CWD check.

Yes, the program is still active and no changes will be made this year, per TPWD. None of the 300+ deer checked last year tested positive for CWD, so they are hoping the zones can be reduced in the future, but all reguations that were in place last season remain in place for 2014.

Do you really think they'll ever "reduce" or "sunset" it? It "protects the entire deer industry in Texas" yada yada billion $ industry, with an excuse like that, they aren't ever going to quit.

Actually, since I work for the .GOV under sequestration, it wouldn't surprise me if it got canned for a more dubious cause. I just didn't want someone spending time, gas, and money trying to turn in a sample when there wouldn't be anyone there to collect it.

I just look at Wisconsin and other states that have gone batchit crazy over CWD and just shake my head. They have quite killing wild deer but they still sample like crazy. Good money and jobs if you're a state employee. And I don't want folks wasting time effort and money either. I'll give our Parks and Wildlife credit for not going crazy over it yet. I just hope they don't find anymore cases. They ARE trigger happy.
