Well today I lost my favorite duck spot. I have been hunting this place for a few years now and every year when I head out to find new places and check on old places I make sure to stop and check on this place and chat up the old man whether it has water on it or not. Three weeks ago I payed him a visit and he once again gave me permission to hunt his place. I decided not to hunt it for the opener because of heavy rains and I didnt want to make a mess of the roads leading in and out of the place.

Since I had some free time this afternoon I figured Id go for an afternoon hunt. As I pull up to the entrance I see a "no hunting, no tresspassing" sign that I have never seen. Not sure of what was going on i went and knocked on his door to see what was up and sure enough he had changed his mind about allowing anyone but family to hunt. Apparently someone had driven in the back entrance and made a mess of the place this past weekend after the heavy rains and had also driven a four wheeler places they shouldnt have. He said he wasnt sure who it was but he had changed his mind. I assured him it wasnt me, that I dont have a four wheeler, and that I had yet to hunt the place this year but his mind was made up. So all i could do was thank him for having allowing me to hunt in previous years and told him that regardless of his decision that I would like to stop by and visit him again if he didnt mind.

Just hate that some people do not realize how generous people like him are when they allow complete strangers on their property. Guess Ill have to find me a new favorite spot. Its just becoming harder and harder to find people like him willing to allow hunters on their property.

That sucks. Sorry to hear. I no what u mean I've had it happen to me before. And u are correct people just don't let strangers on there places to hunt anymore. I grew up door knockin with my dad for dove and deer huntin spots. Nowadays I don't waste much time trying anymore. It's been 10 years since I had someone say yes u can hunt my place.

Have you offered him money? That might change his mind.

Beaversnipe, thanks. It sucks but just have to go knock on some more doors.

Anytime, I've had pretty decent luck over the years. I definitely get turned away more than I get permission but I usually get a few people to grant me permission each year. It's just more difficult each year. Especially with the lack of rain out here in the lubbock area.

Guy, no I didn't offer him money. Not sure if it would change his mind but it's possible. I'm gonna pay him a visit again though.

You might want offer help if you can to fix some of the damage. Just because he had let you hunt there in the past.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

I like the suggestion about offering to help repair the damage. Perhaps if he sees you are willing to invest the time in his land he may change his mind about you. Even if he says no hunting still I would offer the time as a courtesy to his past hunts. Maybe by the time the day is over he will change his mind. If not, you still did the right thing.

Unfortunately as Greekangler said I do believe he is done. I will definitely be getting back out there soon enough to find some more places. As I said I will be stopping by to visit him again at some point. He just wasnt too happy when I talked to him so I figured i better let him cool off about the situation before I go bothering him again.

I knocked on so many doors my knuckles are bleeding.
20 years ago, different story in north tejas. Old farmers passing away, kids selling properties to developers, gas boom didn't help, way more duckhunters, more outfitters with deeper pockets.
Lots of duckdrama out there. Good things NEVER last.
Need to win the mega million and buy 50 tanks. Done!
