My son @ 5yrs old killed his first buck with a .223 TC Encore. They shoot terrorist with that caliber, I suspect they are good enough for deer too.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

I wouldn't use that bullet to do it.

I have a Remington 700 bolt action .223 that my brother and myself hunted with and my wife now shoots. we had a box of 55grn vmax that we shot in it one season in the hill country. it would kill animals...and I would not care to be on the business end of it personally...but not at all what I would call really desirable bullet performance. I shot several does in the head and approximately 70yds...bullet would enter....it would not exit...or only fragments would exit...deer head would remain in-tact and would only sorta swell up....

the deer was DRT...so I mean it was functional...but I'd be very leary of relying on bullets that won't penetrate any better than that.

we still shoot the .223...but now hand load it with a 60grn nosler partition...this bullet will break both shoulders and pass completely thru a deer. the wife shoulder shot an approximately 200lbs boar last year and he went only about 25yds. this is a much more functional bullet.

they are fine enough bullets....but they are made for shooting coons and coyotes....not larger game. they won't hold together if they hit anything sorta solid.

I have seriously been considering a nosler partition but my guy that hand loads didn't know of there performance. 2 years ago I shot a doe with a 53GR vmax and dropped her dead in her track on a shoulder shot. i don't remember looking at the inside

I was just really disappointed in their penetration. some shots did better than others...but all in all...not what I'd consider a reliable bullet for mid-size or larger game.

a regular old 55grn soft point performed MUCH better in my opinion.

the partitions are great. they shoot very accurately, if handloading...they aren' that expensive. takes a small rifle and makes it a reliable contender on larger animals. redchevy is my brother, he does all our loading. you can try and pick his brain on the load data.

its a sweet little rifle to hunt with though. I still enjoy it. its got to be the easiest rifle to shoot that I've ever picked up. absolutely no recoil...just a sharp crack.

I think i'm gonna go hunt deer with a blowgun. One perfectly placed dart right to the jugular should do it.

I'm not a fan of the vmax for hogs anymore. I shot one under the eye the other night and it knocked him cold. He got up mad as hell when I got down to him. Try that 65 gameking over 24.5 gr of rl-15. It's accurate and I haven't had one argue with me about dying.

I would look at the 60 grain nosler partition and the new bonded bullet they released for 224 cal. They are both designed to function in typical twist barrels for the 223 and are far better options than any other cup and core bullet for bigger game.

If your around Weatherford I'll give you some to try out.
The box says you need at least a 1/10 twist to stabilize this bullet. My AR is a 1/7.

Modern day pellet guns can kill deer all day long , but they wouldn't be my choice for deer hunting. Same is true for the 223

Nailed it

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

For pigs, I'm shooting what I'm carrying. Place it at the base of the ear and darn near anything will do the job.

Many people try to take shoulder shots on pigs and get into trouble with little calibers.

So do you do your deer hunting with a .22lr, Mr. Shot Placement?

Or even a tiny .22 CF to stay legal?

I hit a hog square between the eyes with a .223. it just bounced off. nice gun, but far from my first choice for hunting.

It's either the assault rifle craze or they're scared of the recoil of a magnum like a .243, .260, or 7mm-08.
