The Ox ranch near Uvalde, Texas has some big Red Sheep. I'm sure their herd numbers in the hundreds. Large ranch with plenty of hills and it would be a true hunt as they are wild as hell and have pleanty of room to run. I've always been hunting something else when I've encountered them so the only photos I've got are poor quality and taken at a long distances. Good Luck with your choice. Baker

Baker that used to be the 4 aces ranch...they had a large sheep herd. That guy that sold his internet hosting company for like $220 mil. bought it....dude is only 30 or 31. have you been out there since it changed hands?

I have been hunting that ranch for several years now, even before the current owner bought it. I am probably out there 7-8 times a year.I took a giant red sheep off of there a couple of years ago. They have one of the few truly pure Iranian Red Sheep herds around. And, on a ranch that size and with that terrain, it is truly a hunt. Not to mention the fact they don't hang around very long after they see you and can literally run straight up.

I wondered why the Iranian Red Sheep on the Ox look much different than some I've seen photos of here that are supposed to be Red Sheep.

Red Sheep in their native habitat vary. Those closest to Armenian Mouflon range, can tend more towards that look, than those more towards Urial range which tend more towards Urial. The biggest difference between pure Iranian Red Sheep and Hybrids is that you don't get the throwbacks to parent stock type that you occasionally do with hybrids.

Can someone point me to a nice ranch to hunt a trophy red sheep or if you are an outfitter show me what you have available. Thanks Give Ricky Hunt a call. He does bow hunts and raises mouflon and red sheep, I think. He may not be able to do the hunt, but he may know a really good place to go to hunt red sheep if he sold them to the place that has them.

Red sheep are a cross between a Urial and an Armenian Mouflon that occurs naturally in the wild. It can be an Afghan Urial x Armenian Mouflon or a Transcaspian x Armenian Mouflon dependinfg on the range of the two sheep .....THEY are a hybrid whether they are in their native range or in Texas. And depending on the percentage of Urial or Mouflon in the individual sheep you get a slightly different horn shape.
I personally think it's not accurate to talk about "Pure Iranian Red Sheep" unless you are using that term to mean that there is no other sheep bloodline in the ram other than a Urial and Armenian Aouflon. For example ...no Corsican bloodline in the rams past.

Pure Iranian Red Sheep means that they are a hybrid with hundreds of generations of line breeding. Red sheep can be a recent hybrid, but there can be throw backs to either parent, for some generations afterward. At some point there is no difference, both lines will breed true to type, but you need to be aware of it. It's really more of a problem for the ranch owner, so that he's aware that he needs to remove the throwbacks, than to the trophy hunter.

That is a more accurate way of saying it. What I am referring to as "pure" Iranian red sheep have lineage that have been passed down through many generations of line breeding. There are no other sheep involved. Red sheep are traditionally very small animals, in fact they are mostly horns and head. You will see a lot of ranches in Texas that claim to have red sheep and they use that term very loosely. Most of them are crossed with European Mouflon, Corsican, or some other kind of wild sheep within very recent generations. They are bigger than traditional red sheep, and they aren't colored right, they look more like a European Mouflon with red sheep shaped horns. One look into the SCI record books, and you will see the hodgepodge of what people call red sheep, and what SCI allows to be entered as red sheep. If I remember correctly, back when they first high fenced the 4 Aces, they brought in 3 different herds of what I am referring to as "pure" Iranian red sheep from the Patio Ranch. There are no other sheep on the 4 Aces or what is now the Ox Ranch, to protect the purity of what they have here. This is an example of what I think a real red sheep with a very long documented lineage is supposed to look like
