no need to name names, but i was at a local small town "wildlife expo" and after his sales pitch and powerpoint that included a 5 min section on "trophy fish food," i hear him talking to a few guys and saying:

"...you wanna go ahead and try to get those big bucks at 3 or 4 because the ones that happen to make it longer than that will start getting real trashy and declining."

hmmmm.

just curious what age you guys think is "mature" for your area and how often you see bucks that make it past 5-6yo?

We rate mature deer at 5.5+ and have seen good antlers at 6.5. At 7.5 the antlers typically decline, from what we've seen on our ranch, at least. Heaviest mass has been between 5.5-6.5, LF.

I sometimes get upset when people on our ranches take bucks at 3-4, unless they are cull bucks, or unless the hunter is a kid or first timer.

I think if you are low fence place " and hunt horns" anything over 4 should be fair game. If I see one that has potential to be a real stud I'll hold off.

Mature to me is 4.5. Fully mature is 5.5+. On our place we only get to see a handful of 5.5+ year olds every year due to the pressure both on our lease and around us.

Biggest native deer ever killed on my ranches was 7.5. Got bigger every year. I have a deer that was 254" at 7.5, 262" at 8.5, and he looks to be as big or bigger this year at 9.5.

The idea that most deer will decline after 5.5 is bunk. There are many valid reasons to shoot deer at 4.5. But declining antler size isn't a valid reason.

it depends. probably 95% or more of the biggest deer killed in the state are post mature. many are 7.5 years or older.

I believe there is a indirect relationship with age of buck heard vs how many Buck tags are available per person. My point is that a good mature buck in Missouri is 3 to 4 years (you can kill 3 bucks there and rifle season is in the middle of the rut) Vs Kanas is closer to 5 to 6 (you can only kill 1 buck and rifle season is after the rut). Missouri has the ability to grow deer as big and bigger than Kansas, but you just don't see as many 5 year old bucks there.

I believe the same thing happens in Texas with the ability to kill 2 bucks per person in many counties and the ability to kill almost countless with the MLD system (and for longer periods of time). If Texas wants really wants to up the chances for average Joe to get a nice P&Y buck, they need to put the buck tags to one per person (with none transferable) and make the rifle season 10 days like up north. Then we wouldn't need width antler restrictions, we could just say at least 4 points on one side like Missouri has implemented.

Don't think this could happen in Texas because too many people would be up in arms. The result is just a lower age class of bucks on average for the state.....which leads to lower antler scores as well.

mention of a 10 day rifle season could get you bagged and dropped off north of the red in your underoos.

10 day season would have a detrimental effect to certain areas of Texas as well as a reduced bag limit. Many places are already over CC and reducing the numbers taken would increase the numbers. Wouldn't be good for the land or the herd and dang sure wouldn't be good for the antlers.

I don't have any problem at all getting my deer to real maturity. Yes, I said MY.

My boy killed that 8.5 yo last year, really should've taken him at 7.5. Lost 15+ inches but did kick out a big drop tine.

Study posted on hear earlier this year indicated that deer are capable of hitting their max score at 5.5 and every year after that is dependent on rainfall, could go up, down, or stay the same. I don't tend to believe there are too many free range, low fence 8-10 year old deer out there sporting the biggest rack they have ever had.

I don't have as good of info on the bucks because we don't shoot as many, but for does on our place the body weight climbs from birth and peaks at 4.5 to 5.5 YO. After 5.5 it begins to fall again.

And I second the thought that if the rifle season is limited to 10 days we will be overrun with deer and they will be starving to death.

I agree that in some areas it would be bad ever seen 90 deer in a wheat field? farmers don't like that... or 30 deer at a feeder after corn? tooo many... in others I think it would help size.

Mature is dependent on a lot, with all the food they can eat and plentiful water 4.5 is mature for sure...

BUUT go up to Canada, where they have really really hard winters... And most deer are taken at 3.5-4.5 and very few live to see 5.5 because they get beat down cause of the ruts and the winters. You would hardly EVER get a deer to 6.5

Go to south texas where they feed protein and have mild weather... 7.5 is a legitimate point at which you could wait for.

your deer on your place will be slightly different than average. Learn what that means on your place
