He must have rubbed a part of the pedicle off and that's where it landed. It can grow an antler anywhere under the right conditions.

There was pic like this floating around a few years back and everyone assumed it was another buck's antler lodged there from fighting. Turns out it was the buck's own antler growing from his eye.

That might be the case here as I do not see an antler getting lodged like that with the point sticking out.
